Hollyoaks Ratings Soar with 30th Anniversary & Brookside Crossover
Hollyoaks Hits Major Audience Milestones After 30th Year

Channel 4's long-running soap opera, Hollyoaks, is riding an incredible wave of success, having smashed a series of audience records during its landmark 30th anniversary week. The show's bold and dramatic storylines have clearly resonated with viewers, reaffirming its status as a dynamic and youth-focused powerhouse in British television.

Record-Breaking Episodes and a Historic Crossover

The centrepiece of the anniversary celebrations was a groundbreaking episode that made soap history. Broadcast on Wednesday, October 22, it featured the UK's first-ever soap crossover, bringing the world of Hollyoaks together with the legendary Channel 4 soap, Brookside. This special hybrid episode has become Hollyoaks' best-performing episode for consolidated individuals viewing since October 2021 and achieved its highest consolidated share since February 2020.

The drama unfolded on two fronts. On the iconic Brookside Close, Donny Clark (Louis Emerick) was confronted by Sheila Grant (Sue Johnston), who recognised him as Mick Johnson and exposed his secret of faking his own death. Meanwhile, back in the Hollyoaks village, emotional turmoil reached a peak as Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe) suffered a devastating miscarriage, Grace Black (Tamara Wall) was declared dead, and Nancy Osborne (Jessica Fox) collapsed in hospital. The episode was further electrified when Darren Osborne (Ashley Taylor Dawson) confronted Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard) at The Dog in the Pond pub, leading to Tony being shot.

Digital Dominance and Nostalgic Homage

The special crossover episode didn't just excel on traditional television; it dominated the digital space. It became the best-performing Hollyoaks episode on streaming ever, amassing a staggering 522,000 views and surpassing all previous non-Christmas episodes. This digital triumph was complemented by a heartfelt tribute to Brookside, which saw the return of beloved characters including Bobby Grant (Ricky Tomlinson), Billy Corkhill (John McArdle), and Timothy 'Tinhead' O’Leary (Philip Olivier). The episode was made complete with the iconic Brookside theme tune, creating a nostalgic event for fans of both shows.

The momentum continued with the Hollyoaks Later episode, which aired the same night and also performed exceptionally well, pulling in 409,000 views on digital platforms. This underscores a strong audience appetite for the soap's high-stakes storytelling across all viewing methods.

A New Chapter for a British Soap Staple

The success of the anniversary week, which saw the show achieve its largest consolidated individuals share of the year at 4.8%, is a testament to Hollyoaks' successful transition to a digital-first model. The streamlined schedule has sharpened the show's creative impact and strengthened engagement, particularly with its core 16-34-year-old audience.

Under the guidance of Executive Producer Hannah Cheers, the series continues to deliver powerful, character-driven drama that tackles bold and contemporary themes. As the soap enters its fourth decade, this exceptional performance proves the enduring power of innovative storytelling and the fierce loyalty of its fanbase.

Louise Donald, Channel 4 Drama Commissioning Executive, said: "We were thrilled by the reaction to the Hollyoaks birthday episodes which saw a devastating plane crash, character deaths and even made soap history with the Hollyoaks/Brookside crossover special. Hollyoaks has been at the heart of C4’s drama for 30 years and we have no doubt it will continue to deliver explosive, bold and fearless storylines in the years to come."

Hollyoaks airs Monday to Wednesday on E4 at 7pm, with first-look episodes available to stream on Channel 4 from 7am.
