Jeff Brazier's £80k Prize Call Turns Awkward on GMB as Winner Suspects Scam
GMB competition goes wrong as winner suspects scam

In a live television moment that left viewers cringing, presenter Jeff Brazier found himself in an incredibly awkward situation during Friday's edition of Good Morning Britain.

The Unbelievable Prize Reveal

The TV star, 46, who is a regular host of ITV's daytime competition segments, was tasked with phoning a lucky winner to inform her she had won a staggering £80,000 in tax-free cash along with the ultimate Christmas package. However, the anticipated celebration quickly turned into a scene of suspicion and disbelief.

Instead of the elated reaction producers had hoped for, the woman on the other end of the line was instantly wary. She did not believe the news was genuine and treated the entire interaction as a potential scam. Jeff began the call by asking, "What's your name? Did you enter a competition to win?" to which the woman simply and flatly replied, "No."

A Desperate Attempt to Prove It's Real

Attempting to salvage the situation, Jeff Brazier worked to put the winner's mind at rest. He said, "I understand you think this might not be genuine but how can I prove to you that I'm Jeff Brazier and I'm sat in the studio with Kate Garraway and Rob Rinder? Can you switch your TV on please."

His efforts, however, were met with further resistance. The woman declined, stating, "Not at the moment, no." With the conversation going nowhere, the call was eventually cut. Jeff reassured viewers that the ITV team would follow up to convince the winner of the prize's legitimacy.

Co-host Kate Garraway was seen waving at the camera in a bid to prove the broadcast was live, but the winner refused to turn on her television.

Viewer Reaction and a Happy Ending

The painfully awkward exchange did not go unnoticed by fans at home, who quickly took to social media to share their reactions.

  • One viewer wrote: "Well that went well." accompanied by an eye-roll emoji.
  • Another commented: "Did you enter this competition to win Christmas? No." with crying-laughing emojis.
  • A third user observed: "pmsl that didn’t go as expected."

Some fans criticised the competition format itself, suggesting that in an age of prevalent phone scams, the method of contacting winners needed to be revised. One person pleaded, "you need to stop this way of contacting winners. So many scams now no one wants to know. Must be a different way of conducting it."

Fortunately, there was a positive resolution. Later on the Lorraine show, Jeff explained to stand-in host Christine Lampard that the situation had been resolved. "We rung a winner on Good Morning Britain, they answered but said they hadn't entered the competition," he recounted. "They were a little bit shy, a little bit nervous but we've managed to speak to Sheila again. She won Christmas and £80,000 in tax-free cash so she joins the ITV exclusive winners' club."

This was not Jeff's only challenging moment on air that week. On Tuesday, he was seen presenting from a windy and wet Reykjavík to promote a Christmas competition, just days after news emerged of his split from his wife, Kate Dwyer, after seven years of marriage.
