Popular Freeview and Sky Kids' Channels Axed Next Month
Freeview and Sky to lose Pop and Tiny Pop channels

Millions of households across the UK are set to lose access to two popular children's television channels next month, in a significant shake-up for linear broadcasting.

Which Channels Are Closing?

The channels facing the axe are Pop and Tiny Pop, both of which are free-to-view services currently available on Sky, Freeview, and Virgin Media. The final broadcast date for both channels has been confirmed as December 2025.

These channels have been a staple for younger viewers, airing a range of popular shows including Pokémon, LEGO Friends, Hello Kitty, Power Players, and Monster High. They provided dedicated children's content throughout the day and night.

Why Are The Channels Being Shut Down?

The decision to close the channels stems from severe commercial challenges within the UK children's television market. Paul Dunthorne, Managing Director of Narrative, which operates the channels, provided a stark explanation.

He revealed that the commercial value in the sector is now just 4% of what it was a decade ago, making free-to-air channels for this audience unsustainable without public service broadcaster-style funding.

"We’ve taken the decision to close our linear Pop channel at the end of the year," Dunthorne stated. "We’ve done everything that we can to maintain Pop. But free-to-air channels for this audience are simply not commercially viable."

Where Can Viewers Find The Content Now?

While the linear channels are disappearing, it's not the end for the content. The shows will migrate to FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV) platforms. However, accessing this content will require an internet-connected television.

"We will retain our Pop presence on FAST channels in the UK on Freeview, Samsung, LG and other platforms, and internationally, as these continue to offer commercial opportunities," Dunthorne added.

In a further development, it has been confirmed that the Pop Player app and website will also shut down.

As a silver lining for families, Sky has announced it is adding Disney Jr. to its line-up. The channel, which launched on November 13, is part of the Sky Kids package and features shows like Bluey, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+, and Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends.
