Jacob Elordi Compares Filming Intimate Scenes to Choreographed Dance Sequences
Australian actor Jacob Elordi has offered a surprising perspective on filming steamy scenes with co-star Margot Robbie in the new adaptation of Wuthering Heights. The 28-year-old actor, who portrays the tragic Heathcliff opposite Robbie's Cathy, revealed that capturing intimate moments is a highly technical process, no different from choreographing fight or dance sequences.
'Super Technical' Approach to On-Screen Intimacy
In an interview with The Sun, Elordi described the meticulous nature of filming intimate scenes. "It's like, 'Action' and it's like a horse at the race track - straight out of the gates," he explained. "It's no different to choreographing a fight scene or a dance sequence. It's super technical, especially the scene where, it's not a sex scene, but where I'm on top [of Margot] with my hands - that's choreographed because, in that kind of light, you only have so much space to move."
The actor emphasized how practical considerations shape these moments. "So what you do has to fit in the frame and work with the lighting," he added, highlighting the precision required during filming.
Global Promotional Tour and Film Reception
Elordi and Robbie recently concluded an extensive worldwide promotional tour for the film, which included a surprise appearance at a Brisbane cinema on February 15 for their 16th screening. The Australian duo star in British director Emerald Fennell's interpretation of Emily Brontë's 1847 classic novel, set against the wild Yorkshire moors.
Early reactions to the sweeping period drama have been overwhelmingly positive, with many film enthusiasts hailing it as the "movie of the year" on social media. Viewers have reported being deeply moved by the passionate love story that explores the intense and destructive relationship between Cathy and Heathcliff, with some admitting they "cried their eyes out."
Director's Vision for Audience Experience
Director Emerald Fennell, 40, expressed her desire for audiences to have a visceral reaction to the film. Speaking to Time Out before the release, she said, "I want lots of snogging [in the cinema]. I think whatever you can get away with – sorry, Cineworld. There will be some of that, there will also be a lot of people having to be carried out because they're crying so much."
Fennell continued, "I really love seeing movies where people have a visceral experience. I think screaming and laughing and crying and gasping, we want a connected experience."
Box Office Success and Bond Speculation
Wuthering Heights enjoyed an extremely successful opening weekend, grossing US$76.8 million (£56 million) at the global box office. The film's release has also significantly impacted Elordi's career prospects, with the actor now emerging as the favourite to replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond.
Following the film's premiere last Friday, Elordi's odds for the iconic role have improved dramatically to 5/4, surpassing previous favourite Callum Turner, whose odds have drifted from 7/10 to 6/4. Other contenders in the running include Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James, who complete the top four candidates for the coveted part.
Elordi's surging popularity appears directly connected to his performance in Wuthering Heights, with his previous odds for the Bond role standing at just 14/1 before the film's release. The actor's technical approach to intimate scenes and his compelling portrayal of Heathcliff have clearly resonated with both audiences and industry observers alike.
