Death In Paradise Viewers Baffled by Plot Inconsistency in Unusual Monday Broadcast
Fans of the popular BBC detective series Death In Paradise were left scratching their heads at the start of the latest episode, not only due to a puzzling plot hole but also because the show aired outside its traditional Friday evening timeslot. The programme, which typically occupies a prime Friday night position on BBC One, was instead broadcast on Monday, February 16, creating an unexpected scheduling shift for its dedicated audience.
A Murder Mystery and a Photographic Puzzle
In this newest instalment, the Saint Marie police force delved into the mysterious murder of a reclusive pensioner, presenting another classic whodunit for viewers to unravel. Prior to the investigation, the team participated in a photoshoot as part of an initiative designed to bolster public confidence in the local police department. However, Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, portrayed by Don Warrington, was visibly unimpressed by the absence of DI Mervin Wilson, played by Don Gilet, from the group portrait.
When questioned about Mervin's whereabouts, DS Naomi Thomas explained to the Commissioner, 'We did try, sir. He said he's only here short term so didn't think it was his place. Also, apparently, football is on.' This remark prompted a sharp retort from Commissioner Patterson, who fired back, 'And presumably, the crime rate drops every time his team plays?'
Viewer Confusion Over Character Timeline
It was this exchange that sparked confusion among the show's fanbase, with many taking to social media platform X to voice their bewilderment. One viewer pointed out the apparent inconsistency, writing, 'Mervin says he's here short term when he's been here a year already.' Another echoed this sentiment, commenting, 'Mervin is still only there short term? Huh?' while a third simply stated, 'That's news to me!'
This confusion stems from the character's established timeline within the series. DI Mervin Wilson first debuted in the 2024 Christmas special, stepping in as the replacement for Ralf Little's character, DI Neville Parker. He then continued as the lead detective into series 14, which aired in 2025, and has remained for the current series 15. Given that the show has made references to the year 2026, it logically suggests that the detective has been stationed on the fictional island of Saint Marie for a considerable period, contradicting the 'short term' assertion made in the episode.
Schedule Shake-Up and New Additions
The unusual Monday broadcast was a direct result of the BBC's FA Cup coverage, with the match between Chelsea and Hull City taking the show's regular Friday slot on February 13. Nonetheless, loyal viewers were still able to watch the episode that Friday, as it was uploaded to BBC iPlayer ahead of its terrestrial television airing, adhering to the broadcaster's current box-set release strategy.
By the episode's conclusion, Mervin made amends with his colleagues, joining them for the police confidence photoshoot. Meanwhile, the series continues to evolve with new characters. Viewers have recently been introduced to Sergeant Mattie Fletcher, who joined the team at the outset of series 15. The role is played by up-and-coming actress Catherine Garton, 27, as exclusively revealed by the Daily Mail's Katie Hind.
Speaking ahead of the new series, Catherine shared her enthusiasm for both her character and the filming location. 'I didn't quite know what to anticipate, then it exceeded any expectations I could have had. I love the island. Guadeloupe is like a postcard. It's quite unreal,' she said. Gushing about the setting, she added, 'Every time I walked out I was like “this exists, wow!” It’s absolutely stunning. Everyone's nice. I love the culture. The food's great.'
Describing her character Mattie as 'tenacious' and 'sassy', Catherine explained, 'She's really fun to play. She's like your big sister who will tell you what's what, but you can also come to her if you need to.' This new sergeant replaces Officer Darlene Curtis, played by Ginny Holder, who made her final appearance in the 2025 Christmas special.
Death in Paradise continues to air on BBC One and is available for streaming on BBC iPlayer, maintaining its status as a beloved staple of British television drama despite the occasional narrative hiccup and scheduling surprise.
