British actor Danny Dyer, renowned for his long-running role as Mick Carter in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, has secured a pivotal part in an upcoming Channel 4 true crime thriller series. The 48-year-old performer will feature in a dramatic adaptation of the 1980 Iranian embassy siege in London, joining a cast that includes esteemed actor David Morrissey from the hit series Sherwood.

The six-part television series, titled The Siege, is based on the best-selling book by author Ben Macintyre. It has been adapted for the screen by Will Smith, the creative mind behind acclaimed shows like Slow Horses and Veep. The drama promises to deliver a heart-stopping and emotionally charged portrayal of one of Britain's most significant modern security incidents.
Recounting a Tense Standoff
The series will meticulously depict the events that unfolded on 30 April 1980, when six armed Iranian terrorists stormed the Iranian embassy in London, taking 26 individuals hostage. The narrative will follow the intense six-day standoff between the gunmen, their captives, police negotiators, and the eventual high-risk intervention by the Special Air Service (SAS).
Ian Katz, the chief content officer at Channel 4, emphasised the series' ambitious scope. He stated, "The Iranian embassy siege and the daring raid which ended it was an iconic moment that forged the ferocious reputation of the modern SAS. This show is a heart-stopping, emotional thriller that reveals the little-known motivations of the hapless hostage-takers and the very human reality of what went on inside the embassy as the world looked on."
Katz further revealed that the drama will offer new insights, noting, "It will change the way people understand the siege and reveal how close the famous SAS operation came to disaster."
Star-Studded Production Team
The Siege is being directed by Lewis Arnold, known for his work on the dramas Time and Des. Executive production duties are handled by Patrick Spence, whose credits include Mr Bates vs The Post Office and A Spy Among Friends. The cast also features Motaz Malhees, star of the film 200 Metres, and Alex Jennings, celebrated for his role in The Crown.
In addition to his iconic EastEnders character, Danny Dyer is recognised for his performances in football-themed films such as Mean Machine from 2001 and The Football Factory released in 2004. His involvement adds considerable star power to this historical project.
International Collaboration
The series marks a significant international coproduction, with Alexandre Piel, deputy head of drama at ARTE France, commenting, "The Siege is our first coproduction with the UK, and we are truly honoured to be associated with Channel 4 on this fantastic project.
