Coronation Street's harrowing grooming storyline is poised to plunge into even deeper turmoil with a shocking pregnancy test revelation. The controversial plot, which has gripped viewers, centres on teacher Megan Walsh and her illicit relationship with teenage student Will Driscoll.
A Crisis Concealed in a Handbag
In dramatic scenes set to air, Megan Walsh, portrayed by actress Beth Nixon, purchases a pregnancy test, her world already crumbling under the weight of her secret affair. The situation escalates from bad to worse almost immediately. As she leaves the shop with the test hidden in her bag, she is confronted by an angry and jealous Will Driscoll, who demands to know if she spent the night with her cover-up boyfriend, Daniel Osbourne.
Will's mood is already foul, having witnessed the public blossoming of Megan's relationship with Daniel, played by Rob Mallard. The pair were seen together buying a birthday cake for Daniel's young son, Bertie, further fuelling Will's resentment.
Birthday Party Catastrophe
The tension reaches a breaking point at Bertie's birthday party at Number One. In a moment of devastating coincidence, Bertie is asked to fetch cake candles from Alya's bag but mistakenly reaches into Megan's. To the horror of everyone present, the young boy pulls out the pregnancy test, exposing Megan's secret in the most public way imaginable. She is left scrambling for an explanation as the truth threatens to explode.
The fallout from this revelation continues to spiral as the week progresses. Later on, characters Leanne and Eva discover a distraught Megan sobbing in Victoria Garden, though what she confesses to them remains to be seen. In a further twist, Daniel, unaware of the full extent of the crisis, admits to Megan that he is falling in love with her during a visit to the Bistro.
Raising Awareness Through Drama
This intense storyline shows no sign of concluding, a fact underscored by actress Beth Nixon recently signing a new contract with the soap. Speaking about taking on the challenging role, Nixon explained her initial reaction to the casting brief. “Earlier this year, my agent sent me a casting brief and explained it was for a paedophile, which is a bit crazy to play because they’re obviously not a redeemable character, so they can push it pretty far,” she said.
Nixon also addressed the importance of the plot in challenging perceptions. “It creates a lot of debate, because a lot of people say, ‘It’s a 15-year-old boy’s dream’ but, if you flip it the other way round, it’s always seen as disgusting,” she stated. She emphasised the storyline's purpose, adding: “If it’s a storyline that makes one person recognise that this is happening to them and it’s wrong, then it has done its job.”
