CBS Evening News Ratings Plummet 23% in Key Demo After Tony Dokoupil Debut
CBS Evening News ratings dive after Dokoupil debut

The much-hyped debut of Tony Dokoupil as the new anchor of the CBS Evening News has resulted in a significant ratings decline, according to fresh data from Nielsen Media Research. Despite a major promotional campaign, the programme's viewership fell sharply compared to its performance a year ago and to the debut of the previous anchor team.

A Disappointing Debut in the Numbers

For his first official week at the helm, which began on Monday 12 January 2026, Tony Dokoupil averaged just 4.166 million total viewers. In the crucial advertising demographic of adults aged 25 to 54, the show managed only 533,000 viewers. This represents a steep fall from the same week in 2025, which featured coverage of the California wildfires and the lead-up to Donald Trump's second inauguration under then-anchor Norah O'Donnell. Compared to that period, total viewership was down 20 percent, with a 27 percent collapse in the key demographic.

The decline is even more pronounced when measured against the debut week of the previous co-anchor duo, Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson. Dokoupil replaced the pair after they spent less than a year in the role. Compared to their first week, the show declined by 13 percent in total viewers and 23 percent in the demographic.

Network Spin Versus Audience Erosion

CBS News attempted to frame the numbers positively in a press release, highlighting that Dokoupil's premiere was up four percent in total viewership and eight percent in the demo compared to the programme's season-to-date average since September. The network also heavily promoted a 229 percent increase in article traffic for CBS Evening News online and a 58 percent rise in YouTube watch minutes.

However, this narrative obscures a troubling trend of audience erosion throughout the week. After Dokoupil's official Monday debut—which followed a Saturday broadcast anchored in the wake of the Trump administration's invasion of Venezuela—viewership fell each successive night. By Friday, the broadcast had dropped below 4 million total viewers. Friday's audience was 15 percent smaller than Monday's in total viewership and 29 percent smaller in the demo. The following Monday saw an additional eight percent week-over-week drop.

Political Pivot and Industry Reaction

The ratings failure comes amid a controversial editorial shift for CBS News under its new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss. Weiss, founder of the 'anti-woke' outlet The Free Press, was installed by Paramount chief David Ellison in October 2025. Observers inside and outside the network have criticised a perceived 'MAGA-friendly' pivot designed to appeal to President Trump and his supporters.

This strategy was evident in Dokoupil's exclusive interview with President Trump during a tour of a Ford plant in Detroit. During the exchange, Trump repeatedly told Dokoupil, "You wouldn't have a job" if Kamala Harris had won the presidency, a claim the anchor weakly contested. Media critics panned the interview for its lack of challenging questions on major issues like Justice Department resignations or the Epstein files.

The full-court promotional press for Dokoupil's two-week "Live From America" roadshow, which included chartering a private plane, has done little to stem the tide. As noted by industry commentators, even maintaining the show's recent low ratings would have been a failure given the investment; the actual decline signals a deeper problem. Meanwhile, rival broadcasts thrived: ABC's World News Tonight drew 8.1 million viewers, while NBC Nightly News, with its own new anchor Tom Llamas, attracted 6.725 million.

The future of the CBS Evening News now hangs in the balance. The question remains whether the combination of Dokoupil and Weiss can reverse this initial slump, or if the programme's attempt to reposition itself within a polarised media landscape will result in a permanent loss of its traditional audience.
