A British drama described as a 'true masterpiece' and boasting a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is now streaming on Disney+. The show, titled 'Rivals', is a camp, sexy romp that has captivated viewers with its hedonistic 1980s setting and sharp dialogue.
A Departure from the Usual
For those accustomed to twisted crime thrillers or tragic documentaries, 'Rivals' offers a refreshing change. Set in the bucolic Cotswolds countryside, the series contrasts the serene landscape with high-powered drama within a television franchise at war. The show's hedonism is a main character, making it a fun and engaging watch.
Star-Studded Cast and Villainy
David Tennant shines as Lord Tony Baddingham, a certified villain warring with newcomer Declan O'Hara (Aiden Turner) and playboy MP Rupert Campbell Black (Alex Hassell) for franchise rights. The drama unfolds with sordid trysts and forbidden romances, as everyone seems to be sleeping with everyone else.
The costuming and setting are fabulous, from padded shoulders in stately homes to shag-carpeted TV studios. Barbour-suited men hoist shotguns on pheasant shoots, vying for upper-class approval.
Standout Performances
While Tennant is fabulously hateable, Danny Dyer's performance as self-made tech mogul Freddie Jones is a highlight. His love for his wife Valerie (Lisa McGrillis) is joyous, despite his eventual affair with Lizzie Vereker (Katherine Parkinson), which plays out like a school-yard romance.
Viewers have praised the series, with one calling it a 'guilty pleasure' and 'gorgeous to look at'. Season two is already underway, and the show continues to deliver much-needed levity.
'Rivals' is available to stream on Disney+ now.
