BBC Greenlights Second Series of Dawn French's Popular Sitcom
The BBC has officially announced the renewal of the acclaimed sitcom Can You Keep a Secret? starring Dawn French for a second series. This decision comes just weeks after the show's successful debut in January, highlighting its rapid popularity among viewers.
Impressive Viewer Numbers Drive Renewal
The launch episode of the series achieved an impressive 5.3 million viewers across a 28-day period, making it a standout performer for the broadcaster. Additionally, the show ranked as the third biggest comedy launch on BBC iPlayer since 2024, attracting 3.3 million streams, which accounted for 62% of its total audience. This places it behind only Ludwig with 5.5 million and Amandaland with 4.3 million streams.
Plot and Cast Details
In the sitcom, Dawn French portrays Debbie Fendon, a character described as a bossy mother, wife, grandmother, lawn bowls enthusiast, and petty tyrant. The storyline revolves around Debbie discovering she is inadvertently collecting life insurance money for her husband William, played by Mark Heap, who was mistakenly declared deceased after being denied a claim due to Parkinson's disease. In reality, William is alive and hiding in the loft as they await the insurance payout.
Their scheme shocks their highly-strung son Harold, portrayed by Craig Roberts, whose wife Neha, played by Mandip Gill, is a local police officer. The entire cast is set to return for the second series, with filming scheduled to take place later this year in the West Country.
Reactions from the Creative Team
Dawn French expressed her excitement about the renewal, stating, "As chuffed as an actual chuff to hear that we have a second series! More chance for Debbie to get her bossy boots on and create further havoc... hooray."
Creator and writer Simon-Mayhew Archer shared his enthusiasm, saying, "Making this series was a joyous experience. Comedy is a team game, and Dawn, Mark, Craig, Mandip and the whole cast and crew are dream collaborators. I love sitcoms and I want more of them on TV, so I am enormously grateful to everyone who has watched this show and taken the Fendons to their hearts. I hope our success will help even more comedy get made across the UK. It’s one of our national superpowers - and we need it!"
Jon Petrie, BBC director of comedy commissioning, added that the response to the series had been "fantastic." He commented, "Dawn French and the whole creative team have crafted a warm, mischievous comedy that clearly struck a chord with audiences. We’re delighted to bring it back for a second series and can’t wait to see even more secrets unravel."
Future Prospects and Availability
The renewal underscores the BBC's commitment to supporting original comedy programming in the UK. Can You Keep a Secret? continues to be available for streaming on BBC iPlayer, allowing audiences to catch up on the first series ahead of the new episodes. This move is expected to further boost viewership and solidify the show's place in the contemporary television landscape.
