The Piano Returns with Celebrity Judges Twist

Channel 4's acclaimed music competition series, The Piano, is poised for a triumphant return with a significant twist that will see host Claudia Winkleman accompanied by a roster of celebrity judges. The show, which first premiered in February 2023, has already aired 19 episodes across three successful seasons, captivating audiences with its unique format.

Show Format and Past Success

The Piano showcases amateur pianists demonstrating their remarkable talents on public pianos located at major transport hubs across the United Kingdom. These performances are subject to evaluation by a panel of judges. Notable locations have included London St Pancras, Glasgow Central, Manchester Piccadilly, and Liverpool Lime Street stations, providing a vibrant backdrop for the musical displays.

Evolution of the Judging Panel

In its inaugural and second seasons, the judging duties were handled by renowned pianist Lang Lang and singer Mika. The most recent season introduced a change, with Lang Lang being replaced by the seven-time Grammy Award winner, Jon Batiste. The ultimate prize for the winners is the prestigious opportunity to perform at the Royal Festival Hall, a coveted accolade for any musician.

New Series and Celebrity Additions

According to Channel 4's synopsis, "Claudia Winkleman and Mika are back, joined by new mentor and seven-time Grammy winner Jon Batiste, as they begin their search for the UK’s best amateur pianists." However, the upcoming series will feature an expanded judging panel with several famous faces making guest appearances.

At Birmingham New Street Station, pianist Tiffany Poon will join the team. London Bridge station will see the involvement of Jools Holland OBE, while Jamie Cullum will participate at Glasgow Central station. Additionally, composer Hiromi will judge performances at York station, and Alice Sara Ott will feature in the Manchester Piccadilly episode. Fans will be pleased to learn that Jon Batiste will also return to the screen for this new installment.

Claudia Winkleman's Busy Schedule

Claudia Winkleman, who has been an integral part of The Piano since its inception, has maintained a hectic professional schedule. She recently stepped back from her role on Strictly Come Dancing and has just concluded filming for the third series of BBC's The Traitors. Furthermore, her own chat show, The Claudia Winkleman Show, is scheduled to debut later this year.

A teaser trailer for her new BBC program reveals a humorous approach, with Claudia mockingly applying orange paint to her face, quipping, "I'm ready!" The show is set to air on BBC One on Friday nights starting in Spring 2026, where she will interview prominent figures from film, television, music, and other fields in front of a live audience. Initial guests include Hollywood star Jeff Goldblum, Absolutely Fabulous legend Jennifer Saunders, comedian Tom Allen, and Vanessa Williams from The Devil Wears Prada.

The set design is reportedly inspired by the aesthetic of The Traitors castle, aiming to recreate a look that has become closely associated with Claudia. Reflecting on this new venture, Claudia expressed her gratitude, stating, "I can't quite believe it and I’m incredibly grateful to the BBC for this amazing opportunity. I'm obviously going to be awful, that goes without saying, but I'm over the moon they’re letting me try."

The Piano continues to air on Channel 4, bringing the joy of amateur piano performances to viewers across the nation.
