Peacock's The Copenhagen Test Cancelled After One Season Despite Positive Reviews
Peacock Cancels The Copenhagen Test After One Season

Subscribers to the streaming service Peacock have been left disheartened by the announcement that the spy thriller series The Copenhagen Test will not be returning for a second season. The show, which premiered in December last year, featured notable performances from Simu Liu and Melissa Barrera but ultimately failed to attract a substantial viewership.

Fan Reactions and Critical Reception

Upon learning of the cancellation, numerous fans took to social media platforms to voice their sadness and frustration. One disappointed viewer posted on X, stating, "It was fresh and entertaining," while another compared it to the Jason Bourne franchise, remarking, "Wow lame.. it was a pretty good show. Had Jason Bourne elements to it." A third fan suggested that better marketing could have saved the series, noting, "What a shame cause it was such a good show, i feel if they would have marketed this show as sci-fi action show it might have attracted more audience."

The series received generally favourable reviews from both critics and audiences. On the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, it earned a 71% score from critics and an 80% approval rating from fans. Despite this positive reception, the show struggled to reach a wider audience, leading to its premature cancellation.

Plot and Cast Details

The Copenhagen Test followed the story of Alexander Hale, portrayed by Simu Liu, a first-generation Chinese-American intelligence analyst who discovers that his brain has been hacked. This breach gives unknown perpetrators access to everything he sees and hears, forcing him to navigate between his shadowy agency and the hackers while maintaining a constant performance to uncover the truth and prove his allegiance.

Simu Liu, widely recognised for his role as Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently praised his co-star Melissa Barrera, advocating for her to be cast as Wonder Woman in the DC Universe. In an interview, Liu said, "She really pushes herself. I don't know who might be listening to this interview, James Gunn or anybody else out there. But I think she really pushes herself. There were a couple of moments during stunt training where I was like, 'That's Wonder Woman-esque.'"

He continued to commend Barrera's dedication, adding, "After the whole season and after all the training that she had been through, Melissa was looking really sharp as a fighter, and so, she came to set and she was just ready to come to blows. And it was really fun just to get to play that with her, and I'm really proud of what we did too. I'm really proud of her. She did a lot, most, if not all of her own stunts, and she's just the best."

Industry Context and Future Prospects

The cancellation highlights the competitive nature of the streaming industry, where even well-reviewed series can face abrupt endings if they do not achieve sufficient viewer numbers. Fans have expressed hope that the show might find a new audience on other streaming platforms, potentially leading to demands for a revival. However, for now, the main plot of The Copenhagen Test remains resolved within its single season, leaving subscribers to reflect on what might have been.
