Netflix's top spot has been claimed by a new true crime series, 'American Nightmare', which has knocked the popular Harlan Coben adaptation 'Fool Me Once' into second place after 17 consecutive days at number one. The three-part documentary, released on 17 January, has quickly captivated audiences with its gripping real-life story.

The series follows the 2015 case of Denise Huskins and her boyfriend Aaron Quinn, who were awoken by home invaders in their California home. Huskins was kidnapped, sparking a massive search, only to reappear two days later. The case drew comparisons to the 'real-life Gone Girl' due to its unexpected twists.

Produced by Felicity Morris and Bernadette Higgins, who previously found success with 'The Tinder Swindler' in 2022, 'American Nightmare' keeps viewers on edge. Higgins noted, 'A lot of crime stories are very linear... What was really intriguing about this story was the fact that every time you think you know what’s happened, there’s another twist.'
