Harry and Meghan Meet Bondi Attack Survivors on Final Australia Day
Sussexes Meet Bondi Attack Survivors in Sydney

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have personally met survivors of the devastating Bondi Beach terror attack, during the final day of their official visit to Australia. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arrived in Sydney on Friday morning, heading directly to the Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club to engage with those affected by last year's tragedy.

Emotional Encounters with Attack Survivors

During their visit, the royal couple spoke at length with Jessica Chapnik Khan, who heroically shielded her five-year-old daughter during the attack after attending a Hanukkah celebration. They also met Elon Zizer, a 40-year-old father who survived being shot multiple times while protecting his own children from the gunmen.

Honouring Emergency Responders and Museum Exhibition

Harry and Meghan extended their gratitude to the emergency workers who responded to the attack against the Jewish community in December. The couple examined poignant artefacts that will feature in a new exhibition at the Sydney Jewish Museum, including heartfelt messages from the public and illustrations honouring those hailed as heroes during the crisis.

Shannon Biederman, the museum's senior curator, described the royal visit as "really special," emphasising the significance of their engagement with the community's healing process. The exhibition aims to memorialise the events of December 14, when gunmen opened fire on a crowd of over 1,000 people celebrating Hanukkah in Bondi's Archer Park.

Details of the Bondi Beach Attack

The terror attack resulted in fifteen fatalities and dozens of injuries, marking Australia's worst mass shooting since 1996. Naveed Akram, aged 24, faces fifteen counts of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. New South Wales Police allege that Akram and his father, Sajid, who was shot dead by police at the scene, specifically targeted the Jewish Festival of Lights celebration.

Additional Engagements in Sydney

Beyond their solemn visit to Bondi Beach, the Duke and Duchess participated in several other engagements across Sydney. They joined members of the Invictus Games community on the city's famous harbour waters, meeting past competitors of the adaptive sports event founded by Prince Harry.

Meghan Markle is scheduled to appear on stage at a "girls' weekend" retreat, where tickets cost £1,400 each. VIP tickets for the event at the five-star InterContinental Coogee Beach hotel, priced at £1,670, include a group table photograph with the Duchess. The appearance was organised by Gemma O'Neill, host of the Her Best Life podcast, for an intimate gathering of 300 attendees.

The Sussexes' Australian visit concluded with attendance at a rugby fixture between the New South Wales Waratahs and Moana Pasifika at Allianz Stadium on Friday evening, providing a sporting finale to their trip.
