Tensions are reportedly rising between King Charles and his brother Prince Andrew over the Duke of York's future, according to royal experts. The King is seeking to make savings, while Andrew faces financial difficulties, including the potential loss of his home at Royal Lodge if he cannot afford necessary repairs.
Speaking on the Royal Round Up, Express royal correspondent Richard Palmer said: 'I imagine there are tensions between siblings, they previously denied reports of tensions, but it’s a tricky issue. At the root of it all is what Andrew is going to do for the rest of his life.' Palmer added that there is no room for Andrew in public life and any controversial financial moves could reflect badly on the Royal Family.
From April, Andrew's annual subsidy of £249,000 will be cut, leaving him with only a small Navy pension as income. It is believed he was not left any money by his late parents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, as it was passed to King Charles to avoid inheritance tax. However, some commentators speculate Andrew may have a trust fund from his mother.
Since signing a 75-year lease on Royal Lodge, Andrew is responsible for maintenance and repairs. The front of the house reportedly needs repainting, costing around £1 million. He has already spent approximately £7 million on refurbishments since moving in the early 2000s, which he may reclaim if forced to leave. Andrew is partially supported by his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, who lives with him and earns from her business ventures and book deals.
