Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been named 'Humanitarians of the Year' at a ceremony in New York, sparking criticism from some who question the couple's suitability for the honour. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex received the award at the Project Healthy Minds Gala, which focuses on mental health awareness and resources.
The couple were recognised for their work through the Archewell Foundation, which supports families and young people in prioritising online safety. In a joint statement, they described this work as 'some of the most meaningful of our lives' and highlighted the dangers of social media as 'one of the most pressing issues of our time'.
However, the award has drawn backlash on social media, with some users arguing that others, such as humanitarians working in conflict zones, are more deserving. One commenter wrote: 'There are people who have put their lives literally at risk doing humanitarian work in Gaza... But Prince Harry & Meghan Markle get humanitarian of the year award? For what?'
Criticism also referenced recent controversy surrounding African Parks, a charity on whose board Prince Harry serves. Reports have emerged that the Chadian government severed ties with the organisation over allegations of financial misconduct and failure to protect wildlife. One user said: 'The irony writes itself – giving Harry & Meghan a humanitarian award while their charity is being accused of misconduct & wildlife violations.'
Despite the backlash, the couple continue to advocate for online safety, with Harry warning about 'the explosion of unregulated artificial intelligence' and noting that 4,000 families are pursuing legal action through the Social Media Victims Law Centre. The Archewell Foundation has also partnered with ParentsTogether, a non-profit focused on family advocacy and online safety.
