Eriksen in Good Spirits After Collapse, Set for Discharge

Christian Eriksen has issued an update on his condition after collapsing during a friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine, sharing information released by Denmark's national team doctor on social media. The former Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder is with his family and is anticipated to leave hospital shortly.

Encouraging News from Team Doctor

Team doctor Martin Boesen delivered the encouraging news. He said: "I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well. He is with his family and in good spirits. The expectation is that he will be discharged soon and return home. We are taking good care of the players and staff and remain in regular contact with them."

The friendly fixture was abandoned after 65 minutes, immediately after Eriksen received treatment. His teammates were visibly distressed as the Wolfsburg star experienced a frightening incident for a second time, five years after he collapsed with a cardiac issue during Euro 2020.

Incident Details

The 34-year-old was conscious as he left the pitch in Odense and sufficiently well to walk into the ambulance, while supporters inside the stadium applauded and chanted Eriksen's name. After the match, Boesen provided an initial update, stating: "He was briefly out, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him. Now he needs to be examined further at the hospital to find out what caused the incident."

Eriksen had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted, a device designed to restore a normal heart rhythm, after suffering a cardiac arrest during a match against Finland in 2021. He required life-saving resuscitation on the pitch in harrowing scenes that shocked the footballing world.

Return to Professional Football

The ICD device enabled him to return to professional football, although regulations surrounding the medical instrument meant he was unable to continue his career at Inter Milan. Eriksen subsequently joined Brentford to revive his playing career in February 2022, before going on to represent Manchester United, and now Wolfsburg.
