The Duchess of Edinburgh made a surprise guest appearance on the long-running BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers, joining the cast for a special episode aired on Thursday evening. Sophie, a self-professed fan of the series, recorded her segment at the BBC Mailbox in Birmingham back in May.
Behind-the-Scenes Details
Behind-the-scenes photographs show the Duchess wearing a light blue polka-dot dress, grinning in a recording studio as she read her lines. She was joined by actors Tim Bentinck (David Archer), David Troughton (Tony Archer), and Susie Riddell (Tracy Horrobin). The episode was recorded as part of the drama's 75th anniversary year and aired at 7pm on Thursday.
Role in the Episode
The Duchess was revealed as a surprise guest at the fictional Borchester Show, in her real-life role as honorary president of Linking Environment and Farming (Leaf). The BBC website previewed the plot: “Nerves are frayed on the day of the Borchester Show, and a surprise guest makes their mark.”
Royal Connections to The Archers
Sophie is not the first member of the Royal Family to appear on the series. Queen Camilla, also a devoted fan, appeared in 2011 in her role as President of the National Osteoporosis Society during a special episode marking The Archers' 60th anniversary. Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth II's sister, made a cameo in 1984 as a surprise guest at a fundraising fashion show for the NSPCC at Ambridge's Grey Gables hotel.
Before recording, the Duchess met the cast and crew, chatting with Charles Collingwood, who plays Brian Aldridge.
