In a dramatic pre-fight operation, police swarmed Tottenham's football stadium last weekend to arrest a well-known celebrity on suspicion of rape, just moments before the highly anticipated Tyson Fury versus Arslanbek Makhmudov boxing match commenced.
Police Swoop at High-Profile Sporting Event
On Saturday, April 11, as thousands of boxing enthusiasts descended upon London's Tottenham stadium to witness "The Gypsy King" Tyson Fury's return to the ring, Metropolitan Police executed a targeted arrest operation. The celebrity, a man in his 30s whose identity remains undisclosed by authorities, was taken into custody at approximately 8 p.m. as the undercard fights were getting underway.
The arrest was pre-planned, with detectives aware of the individual's attendance at the bout. A source close to the investigation revealed, "It was a targeted pre-planned operation and he was stunned. Some people saw it but the police were trying to be discreet. It was over an allegation from earlier this year. It was a surprising swoop."
Details of the Allegations
The man was arrested on suspicion of rape, sexual assault, and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. These allegations relate to reported sexual offences that occurred at an address in Golders Green, North London, in January of this year. A female victim is receiving support from specially trained officers.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed, "A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape, sexual assault and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent on Saturday, 11 April. This relates to sexual offences which reportedly occurred at an address in Golders Green in January. A female victim is being supported by specially trained officers. The man has been released on bail as enquiries continue."
The Boxing Event Unfolds
Despite the police activity, the main event proceeded with 37-year-old Tyson Fury coming out of retirement to defeat 36-year-old Russian contender Arslanbek Makhmudov in front of 64,500 fans. Fury, who had previously announced retirement after defeating Dillian Whyte in April 2022, made his much-anticipated return to the ring.
The Gypsy King had proclaimed he was 'going out with a bang' after the Whyte fight, stating, "I fulfilled everything I've ever wanted to fulfil. I will retire as only the second heavyweight in history, after Rocky Marciano, to retire undefeated. I was unbeatable at this game." However, his retirement proved short-lived, with returns to fighting in December 2022 against Derek Chisora and October 2023 against Francis Ngannou.
Family Concerns and Future Plans
Tyson Fury's father, John Fury, has publicly criticized his son's continued boxing career, stating, "I think he's past his best. I'm a no-filter kind of guy - I say it how I see it. I love him, but there are too many people patting him on the back and telling him things that aren't true, building him up like he's invincible. He's not and he hasn't been for a while." John added that "boxing destroyed" their relationship.
In response, Tyson acknowledged his father's concerns while affirming his passion for the sport: "I just take his comments as those of a concerned parent. My dad wanted me to retire six years ago, after a while, he said even two years would have been enough." The champion emphasized that his return wasn't motivated by money or the need to prove critics wrong, but rather by genuine love for boxing.
"It's about the love of the game and the love of this fight business that I'm in," Fury explained. "As for the naysayers who say, 'Oh, he might be finished,' then obviously I want to prove them wrong. But more than that, I just want to enjoy it, have fun in there, and do what I've always done - enjoy it and have fun." He concluded by expressing readiness to "put on a show" for his fans, "as always."
The arrested celebrity, meanwhile, has been released on bail pending further investigation, having missed the entire boxing event following his detention by police.
