In a significant development for fans of the Western drama franchise, the Yellowstone universe is poised to expand dramatically with the confirmation of a highly anticipated spin-off series. Star Cole Hauser has unveiled fresh details about the upcoming show, which will centre on the characters Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, portrayed by Kelly Reilly and Hauser respectively.
Dutton Ranch Spin-Off Announcement
Hauser confirmed the imminent arrival of the series by sharing a promotional poster for Dutton Ranch on social media. The poster features the letters D and R intricately intertwined, accompanied by the tagline 'new series, coming soon.' The actor captioned the image with the phrase 'Here…we…go,' sparking an enthusiastic reaction from fans in the comments section.
This announcement follows Hauser's previous denial in a May interview with Fox, where he explicitly stated, 'Well, first of all, it’s not ‘Dutton Ranch.’ That’s not the name of it.' The reversal now solidifies Dutton Ranch as the official title, marking a new chapter set after the events of the original Yellowstone series.
Expanding the Yellowstone Franchise
The Yellowstone franchise, masterminded by Taylor Sheridan, already boasts an extensive lineup of series. This includes the prequel instalments 1883 and 1923, as well as the sequel series The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, and Matthew Fox. Additionally, the spin-off Marshalls features Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton.
Notably, Kevin Costner's character John Dutton, a central figure in the original series, will not appear in Dutton Ranch. Costner was written off Yellowstone in a November 2024 episode, following a highly publicised falling out with Sheridan over scheduling conflicts related to Costner's Horizon movie franchise.
Behind-the-Scenes Tension and Fallout
The departure of Costner created considerable behind-the-scenes tension, as revealed by co-star Luke Grimes. In a December 2024 interview with Men's Health, Grimes admitted, 'I haven't talked to him since,' referring to Costner. He elaborated, 'It's not a case of any hard feelings or anything; it's just, he's Kevin Costner. He's a big deal. I do have his phone number — I just don't feel like it's my place to reach out. He can reach out to me if he wants to.'
Grimes further reflected on the unexpected nature of Costner's exit, comparing it to personal loss. 'None of us saw it coming the way it did, and obviously there was news about possible blowups behind the scenes or whatever,' he said. 'But just, like, in life, man, these things happen. They happen fast and they're not predictable.' He drew a poignant parallel to his father's death, stating, 'I lost my father a few years ago. It happened fast, and it was not the way that you would think that that would happen.'
Impact on Yellowstone's Finale
Costner's abrupt exit after nearly eight years on the show instilled a sense of finality, accelerating the conclusion of Yellowstone. Grimes explained to People in November 2024, 'Him not coming back felt like, "Okay, we're going to have to land this plane now for real."' He added, 'I think the patriarch leaving was always going to be part of the story. That's always where it was headed, like, "What do these kids do? What does this family do when their rock is gone?"'
Yellowstone continued for approximately one month after Costner's departure before wrapping up with its fifth and final season. The spin-off Dutton Ranch now emerges as a direct continuation, exploring the aftermath of John Dutton's absence through the lens of Beth and Rip's journey.
