Lewis Capaldi has moved to reassure fans that he is “absolutely fine” after footage of him twitching on stage during a performance in Liverpool went viral, prompting concern for his health.
The singer, who is currently on a UK and European tour that concludes in mid-March, was filmed twitching while performing his hit ‘Someone You Loved’ at the Liverpool show on Thursday (January 19). In a TikTok video addressing the footage, Capaldi explained that he has Tourette’s syndrome, which causes the involuntary movements.
“I’m doing this quite a lot and sort of like look a bit uncomfortable. It’s just – I’ve got Tourette’s, so I’m just twitching quite a bit here,” he said. “It’s not an issue in the slightest, I’m absolutely fine. It’s just this happens when I get like tired, nervous, excited, whatever.”
Capaldi revealed his Tourette’s diagnosis last year, noting that the condition affects over 300,000 people in the UK. “My shoulder twitches when I am excited, happy, nervous or stressed. It is something I am living with: it’s not as bad as it looks,” he said at the time. He added that he receives Botox injections in his shoulder to help manage the movements.
The tour, which kicked off in Leeds, has been well-received. NME described the opening show as a “raucous best man’s speech” from the singer, who has a four-times-platinum debut album and four Number One singles.
