Helen Skelton Opens Up About 'Really Hard' BBC Show Exit
Television presenter Helen Skelton has candidly addressed her departure from BBC Radio 5 Live, describing it as a "really hard" decision to walk away from what she considered her "dream job." The 42-year-old, known for her roles on Morning Live and former shows like Blue Peter, reflected on the emotional challenges of leaving the broadcaster in 2023 after just one year hosting a Sunday show.
The Dream Job That Became a Tough Choice
In a recent interview on Kate Thornton's White Wine Question Time podcast, Skelton elaborated on her exit, stating, "It was the dream job in a million and one ways." She expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity, highlighting her love for live radio and the privilege of working with the BBC. The show allowed her to cover sports and engage in journalistic work, albeit with humility as she noted, "I'm not a proper journalist, I'm not cut that way."
Skelton emphasized the personal connections and convenience of the role, mentioning that it involved collaborating with some of the best people in the industry, whom she considered friends, and was located just a short walk from her house—a rare benefit given her hectic schedule. "It was jackpot on every level," she added, making the decision to leave all the more difficult.
Family Commitments and Public Statement
The presenter, who announced her split from rugby player Richie Myler in 2022 and shares three children aged between three and nine with him, cited family responsibilities as a key factor. At the time of her departure, she told fans "the juggle was real," referring to balancing her busy career with motherhood. In her exit statement, she noted, "I didn't want to go, but an eight-year-old will be happy about it," underscoring the prioritization of her children's needs.
Skelton revealed that her on-air farewell wasn't planned; when a colleague mentioned it during the broadcast, she felt compelled to respond. "I remember I felt bad saying [it], we were like a little family and we felt like we were onto something good which was really hard to walk away from," she explained, acknowledging the headlines her statement generated.
Current Projects and Career Moves
Since leaving BBC Radio 5 Live, Skelton has transitioned to a regular presenting role on BBC's Morning Live, where she shares hosting duties from Monday to Wednesday with other main presenters. Her career continues to thrive with diverse projects, including appearances on Countryfile, On the Farm, and Lost and Found in the Lakes.
Tonight, viewers can see her in a new episode of Springtime on the Farm, which airs at 7pm on Channel 5 and celebrates the work of farmers across the country. Additionally, she is showcasing her competitive side on ITV's Celebrity Lingo, scheduled for 7.30pm on ITV and ITVX. These engagements highlight her versatility and ongoing presence in British broadcasting, as she navigates post-exit opportunities while reflecting on the challenges of her career choices.
