Gladiators Star Jet Reveals True Origin of Her Nickname After 30 Years
Gladiators Jet Shares Real Meaning Behind Her Nickname

Gladiators Icon Jet Unveils the Real Story Behind Her Famous Nickname

Diane Youdale, the beloved Gladiators star famously known as Jet, has shared exclusive insights into the true origin of her nickname, revealing it was not what many fans might have assumed. Now 56 years old, Diane shot to fame in the 1990s as a pin-up star on the hit Saturday night show, captivating audiences from 1992 until 1996.

The Unexpected Reason for the Jet Moniker

In a recent interview, Diane explained that when producers first told her she would be called Jet, she was initially taken aback. "I thought to myself, my hair isn’t that dark," she recalled. However, the nickname had nothing to do with her appearance. Instead, it was all about her speed. "They said they wanted me as Jet because of my speed! I was one of the quickest Gladiators," Diane revealed. The name was reportedly coined by executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, known as Nasty Nigel, who went on to achieve global success with various light entertainment shows.

From Audition to Stardom and a Sudden Exit

Diane's journey to Gladiators began with an audition she initially misunderstood. "I was asked to audition for this new show and I had no idea what it was about other than it was called Gladiators," she said. After gym tests and an army assault course, she was surprised to be cast as a Gladiator rather than a contestant, given her gymnast build. Her time on the show ended abruptly in 1996 due to a serious neck injury sustained during a live Pyramid event at Wembley Arena, forcing her to quit after four memorable years.

Life After Gladiators: A Multifaceted Career

Since leaving Gladiators, Diane has built a diverse and fulfilling career. A trained choreographer, she has appeared on TV shows, presented dance programs, and trained as a psychotherapist. Today, she describes wearing "three different hats." She works as a support care worker with social services, teaches and lectures in counselling and psychotherapy, and maintains her passion for fitness by instructing exercise classes. "I love my ladies, my boys, my participants and we have so much fun on wellness and fitness pathways," Diane shared, noting she has been teaching for 34 years since age 19.

Enduring Fame and Fan Recognition

Despite three decades passing since her last appearance as Jet, Diane still gets recognised by fans in public. "Sometimes I get people going 'I really recognise you' and 'where do I know you from?'" she said. She cherishes memories of how the show brought families together, with one fan recalling it as the one time they could sit without arguing, focused on the TV. Diane remains passionate about wellness, emphasising that "the one big investment that we've all got is this thing we're sat in and it's our bodies and our mental health."
