Flea's Jazz Odyssey: Trumpet-Led Soulful Journey

While many rock musicians might indulge in less savory pursuits during extensive tours, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea chose a different path. During the band's global tour from 2022 to 2024, he dedicated his time to mastering the trumpet, an instrument he first explored in childhood before his career in funky rock took precedence. Now, at 63 years old, Flea's daily dedication and open-minded approach have culminated in a deeply meditative and groovy jazz odyssey titled 'Honora'.

A Star-Studded and Soulful Collection

Named after a family member, 'Honora' assembles an impressive lineup of peers and luminaries from the Los Angeles jazz and experimental scenes. The album features ten tracks that include Flea-penned instrumentals, chanted mantras, and creative reinterpretations of classic songs. Flea himself takes on the role of narrator in the spirited track 'A Plea', delivering a yelled call for sanity with the mantra 'Live for peace! Live for love!' amidst global turmoil.

Imaginative Reinterpretations and Collaborations

One of the standout moments on the album is Flea's trumpet-led rendition of Funkadelic's 'Maggot Brain', where he beautifully reimagines Eddie Hazel's famous guitar solo into a plaintive and soulful piece. The collaboration extends to other notable artists, with Radiohead singer and Atoms for Peace bandmate Thom Yorke co-writing and performing on the dreamlike, elastic-grooved 'Traffic Lights'. Additionally, Nick Cave offers a rendition of Jimmy Webb's 'Wichita Lineman', delivering exactly the haunting and emotive performance one might anticipate.

Despite the high-profile contributions, 'Honora' never feels dilettantish. Instead, it is sincere, exploratory, and deeply soulful. Tracks like 'Morning Cry', powered by Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker and bassist Anna Butterss, showcase a frisky and energetic side, while 'Frailed' provides a minimalist dub groove that allows Flea's thoughtful trumpet-playing to breathe and shine. In a particularly gorgeous moment, Flea blows Frank Ocean's 'Thinkin Bout You' over a bed of strings, creating a lush and emotive soundscape.

Venturing Far from the Day Job

Although there are fleeting contributions from Red Hot Chili Peppers bandmates Chad Smith and John Frusciante, the joy of 'Honora' lies in hearing Flea venture so far from his usual rock domain. This album is a testament to his artistic growth and willingness to explore new musical territories, resulting in a cohesive and engaging jazz experience that stands on its own merits.
