Eamonn Holmes Opens Up About Debilitating Health Struggles and Career Reflections

Veteran television presenter Eamonn Holmes has candidly discussed his severe health challenges, expressing uncertainty about whether medical professionals will ever discover a cure for his condition. The 66-year-old broadcaster, whose health sharply deteriorated after dislocating his pelvis in 2021, has undergone multiple spinal surgeries across three consecutive years.

Chronic Pain and Mobility Issues

Holmes revealed that the initial injury resulted in three slipped discs, leading to surgical interventions in 2021, 2022, and 2023. These procedures have left him largely immobile, dependent on a wheelchair for movement and requiring assistance from a team of carers for daily tasks such as dressing. The GB News host described how this loss of mobility and persistent back pain have profoundly impacted his life.

'Well obviously I've been better,' Holmes stated. 'I've got this back and paralysis problem which has been with me now for three years. It's terrible to come to terms with. The thing is nobody seems to know what the problem is so I just stick with it and hopefully they'll find a cure one day.'

When questioned about daily discomfort, Holmes responded: 'Paralysis and mobility then pain. It's hard to get about. This has affected me in so many ways.'

Professional Resilience and Current Work

Despite these significant health obstacles, Holmes maintained a positive public appearance this week at The Hippodrome Casino, where he participated in a Q&A session with television presenter Hayley Palmer for a special live Audience With event. Using a stroller to walk himself to the stage, Holmes emphasized his gratitude for his presenting role at GB News and his enduring passion for television work.

'The lovely thing and great thing about GB News is you can sit down and talk, talk to the audience which is great,' he explained. 'But I'll not be running along to do the weather forecast or anything like that. I love work. it's not like a days work like my father works or my brothers - they work. My hands haven't done a days work in my life.'

Holmes continued: 'You notice the difference when you're not doing it the way other people are doing it in real life. It's the most amazing thing. I'd say to any of you do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life and that's a lovely philosophy in life.'

Career Transition and Industry Observations

Before joining GB News in 2022, the Irish presenter co-hosted ITV's morning show alongside his ex-wife Ruth Langsford from 2006 until 2021. Following the departures of Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield in 2023, Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard assumed regular presenting duties on This Morning. Holmes offered his perspective on the new hosting team, acknowledging their competent performance.

'I don't see them doing anything wrong,' Holmes remarked. 'I was out with Cat's husband the other day on St Patrick's Day.'

Explosive Revelations About Mariah Carey Interview

During the Q&A session, Holmes shared memorable anecdotes from his four-decade television career, notably identifying American singer Mariah Carey as his most challenging interview subject. He described her as 'the biggest diva of them all' and his 'most hated TV interview of all time.'

'She's always is a complete pain in the a**,' Holmes declared. 'I don't understand why people give them this superiority and presence and whatever. I've interviewed her a number of times and she's always difficult. I wouldn't care less if I never saw her again.'

Holmes recounted a particularly contentious encounter where Carey arrived four hours late for a scheduled interview and immediately decided to take a nap instead of commencing their conversation. When informed by Carey's team that she was 'tired' after waking at 9 AM, Holmes—who had been awake since 4 AM—responded with frustration.

'Bearing in mind I've been up from four o'clock that particular day so I'm going, 'what the hell's going on here,' so I said 'right if she's not here in the next 10 minutes I'm going',' Holmes recalled.

After Carey finally appeared and lay down on a chaise-longue, Holmes described the surreal scene: 'And I said 'what the f**k is going on here?' They said 'Ms Carey is very tired, she's very tired, she's been up from nine o'clock this morning'. I said 'she's been up from f*****g nine o'clock I've been up from four!'

In a bold move that shocked Carey's entourage, Holmes lay down beside the singer on the sofa in an attempt to proceed with the interview. This action provoked outrage from her team, prompting Holmes to cancel the interview entirely and depart the premises. Reflecting on the incident, Holmes noted: 'I wouldn't do it now, because things have changed.'
