Charlie Quirke's Touching Marathon Gesture for Mother Pauline
In an exclusive revelation, actor Charlie Quirke, son of beloved television star Pauline Quirke, has disclosed a heartfelt mission as he prepares to tackle the London Marathon. The 31-year-old is set to run the gruelling 26.2-mile race on Sunday, 26 April, with a dedicated aim to raise substantial funds for Alzheimer's Research UK, following his mother's dementia diagnosis in 2021.
A Personal Crusade Against Dementia
Pauline Quirke, the 66-year-old icon from Birds of a Feather, was diagnosed with dementia three years ago, a condition that progressively impairs memory and daily functioning. The family publicly shared this news in January last year when her husband, Steve Sheen, announced her withdrawal from professional commitments. Charlie's marathon effort is a poignant response to this challenging situation, driven by a desire to support research into a cure for the disease, which affects nearly one million people in the United Kingdom, with Alzheimer's being the most prevalent form.
Star-Studded Team Quirke Takes on the Challenge
Charlie will not be running alone; he has assembled an impressive group of friends and colleagues under the banner of Team Quirke. The team includes Hollywood actor Jack O'Connell, who worked with Pauline on the E4 series Skins, alongside Luke Roskell, Adam Long, Andrew Knott, and sports broadcaster James Sharman. Charlie's fiancée, Chloe Thornton, a 27-year-old tech strategist at Google DeepMind, will also join him, providing unwavering support since Pauline's diagnosis.
In an interview with The Mirror, Charlie expressed his motivations: "It's going to be a real honour. I told Alzheimer's Research UK I'd only feel comfortable running if Chloe and James could do it with me, as the two people closest to me. When they said yes, we came up with the idea of forming Team Quirke and offered the opportunity to some of my best friends. When I said why we'd be running, they all agreed instantly."
Fundraising Success and Increased Goals
The team's fundraising campaign has already seen remarkable success, surpassing an initial target of £10,000 within weeks. Generous donations have poured in, including £2,000 from actor James Corden and £500 from Dominic Cooper. Encouraged by this outpouring of support, Charlie and his team have now raised their goal to £15,000, with all proceeds directed towards Alzheimer's Research UK's efforts to find a cure.
Charlie remarked on this achievement: "It's incredible that we smashed our target so early. We've now upped it in the hope we can raise even more for the charity. We want to do everything we can to help find a cure for dementia. All the donations we raise for the marathon will support their search for a cure. With the right support and funding, we can improve our understanding of dementia and develop more effective treatments."
Family Support and Emotional Motivation
Pauline and her husband Steve, along with their daughter Emily, 40, will be cheering from home, watching the marathon on television. Charlie shared: "[They] will be watching it on the tele as they have done every year, just this time, their little boy will be out there." For Charlie, who played Travis in the Birds of a Feather reboot, the driving force to cross the finish line is simple: "Purely and simply, mum."
Reflecting on the experience of living with someone affected by dementia, Charlie added: "It really is different for everyone. Every day is a school day. The more awareness we can raise, the better for all. It's a marathon not a sprint, which feels quite poignant."
Looking Ahead: Wedding Plans and Future Hopes
Charlie and Chloe, who met at the All Points East festival in London in 2021 and got engaged in Athens in late 2024, are also planning their wedding. However, Charlie humorously noted: "We're looking at wedding plans, but let's get the marathon out the way first." This event marks not only a physical challenge but a deeply personal journey to honour his mother and contribute to a vital cause, embodying a message of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
