Topshop Makes High Street Return with Tolu Coker Collaboration
Topshop has made a significant return to the British high street, re-entering public consciousness through its presence in 32 John Lewis stores across the country. The brand is now making a bold fashion statement by partnering with London Fashion Week favourite, British-Nigerian designer Tolu Coker, for its first major collaboration since its comeback.
Tolu Coker's Rise in Fashion
Coker first captured the fashion industry's attention when she debuted her sustainable, unisex AW19 collection titled 'Juvenile Consciousness' at London Fashion Week in 2018. This followed her graduation from Central Saint Martins, the prestigious London art school that has nurtured numerous fashion icons including Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Stella McCartney, and Phoebe Philo.
Her professional journey included valuable stints at renowned fashion houses such as Maison Margiela, J.W. Anderson, and Celine, which provided crucial experience that propelled her career forward. Eight years after her debut, Coker has achieved international recognition, highlighted by her selection as a finalist for the prestigious LVMH Prize last year. This award celebrates emerging designers under 40 who have produced at least two collections, with Coker narrowly missing the top honour to Japanese designer Soshi Otsuki.
Royal Recognition and Collection Details
Coker's talent recently received royal endorsement when King Charles III made a surprise appearance at her AW26 collection show on Thursday 19th February. The monarch sat front row between designer Stella McCartney and British Fashion Council Head Laura Weir at the NewGen Space at 180 Strand, demonstrating the significance of her work within British fashion circles.
The 18-piece capsule collection for Topshop features trans-seasonal knitwear, a distinctive 'barrel' jacket with matching jeans, tailored blazers, pleated trousers, and knitted dresses. Every garment has been designed with longevity in mind, reflecting Coker's commitment to creating clothing that endures beyond seasonal trends.
Personal Connection and Design Philosophy
The collaboration draws deeply from Coker's personal background, rooted in her London upbringing on North Kensington's Mozart Estate and her experiences within the city's Nigerian community. Coming from a working-class family with Yoruba heritage, these influences shape the collection's aesthetic and ethos.
'Topshop was my first job when I was 16, so this collaboration is personal,' Coker explains. 'But it's also a statement of intent. We designed with restraint, maintained quality, considered quantities, and made circular choices, because accessibility shouldn't mean excess. The collection is built to live beyond a season.'
Future of Fashion Collaboration
Coker believes such partnerships represent the future of the UK fashion industry. 'The reach and resources of brands like Topshop, coupled with the ideas and rigour of young designers, is how we shift our approach to design in a tangible way,' she states. 'It takes bravery to interrogate what 'accessible' can mean and to take real steps to evolve it.'
The collection includes several key pieces that showcase Coker's design philosophy:

- Tolu Coker X Topshop Barrel Denim Jacket
- Tolu Coker X Topshop Tailored Trousers
