Production is officially underway on the sequel to the 1997 cult classic film Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, with Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino returning to their iconic roles. The announcement was made via an Instagram post from 20th Century Studios, featuring Kudrow and Sorvino seated in director's chairs labeled "Romy and Michele 2." The post was captioned: "The reunion you've been waiting for! The Romy and Michele sequel is now in production." Sorvino expressed her excitement in the comments, writing: "It's finally happening. Bursting with joy to be 'reunited!'"
Original Film's Legacy
The original movie, released in 1997, follows two best friends who realize they were not popular in school and decide to fabricate elaborate lies to impress their former peers during a high school reunion. The film also starred Janeane Garofalo and Alan Cumming, with a cameo from Justin Theroux. Now, more than 25 years later, the sequel brings back many of the original cast members, including Garofalo, Cumming, Camryn Manheim, and Julia Campbell.
Long-Awaited Sequel
Rumors of a sequel have circulated for years, and the project gained momentum when Kudrow and Sorvino marked the film's 25th anniversary at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. The pair wore coordinated blue and pink suits, paying homage to their characters' iconic reunion outfits. During the ceremony, they recreated the voices of their dim-witted characters and even brought out a stack of Post-it notes—a nod to their characters' lie about inventing the sticky note pads.
Screenwriter Robin Schiff, who wrote the original film, has reportedly returned to pen the sequel. Fans can look forward to seeing the beloved characters reunite once again, with the new installment promising more humor and heart.
