The BBC has announced the cancellation of Football Focus after more than 52 years, citing shifting audience habits. The Saturday lunchtime football magazine show, which first aired in 1974, will conclude at the end of the current season.
End of an Era for Football Focus
Presented by former England international Alex Scott since 2021, the programme has been a staple for generations of football fans. However, the BBC stated that “difficult decisions around how the licence fee is spent” were necessary as viewers increasingly consume football content through digital platforms.
Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, acknowledged the show’s legacy: “Football Focus has been a hugely important programme in the history of BBC Sport and has played a key role in telling the stories of the game for generations of viewers.” He added that the decision was made prior to last week’s wider BBC savings announcement, reflecting the ongoing shift in audience engagement with football.
What’s Next for Alex Scott and BBC Football Coverage?
Despite the axe, Alex Scott will remain with BBC Sport. She is set to lead coverage of the men’s World Cup this summer and the Women’s World Cup in 2027, alongside regular appearances covering the Women’s Super League and BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
The BBC confirmed that a new programme, The Football Interview, will occupy the Saturday lunchtime slot at 12:45pm previously held by Football Focus. Meanwhile, the live scores show Final Score will continue as usual.
The decision marks the end of a long-running broadcast that has been a fixture of British sports television for over half a century, as the BBC adapts to the evolving media landscape.
