Barbara Flynn has addressed her future on the BBC series Beyond Paradise, expressing her desire to return for a fifth series. The actress, who portrays Anne Lloyd, spoke exclusively about her experience reprising the role and the possibility of continuing with the show.
Barbara Flynn on Returning as Anne Lloyd
As the current series concludes tonight, viewers will discover the fate of Detective Humphrey Goodman, played by Kris Marshall. Humphrey has been instructed to dismiss a member of the Shipton Abbott police team due to budget cuts, and it appears he has volunteered himself for redundancy.
Barbara Flynn, who has played Martha's mother from the beginning, described returning to the character as "like putting on a lovely glove or putting on a nice shoe." She praised the show's habit of employing young writers, saying, "Sometimes they are teething things that can be difficult, but actually it's a wonderful thing to do. There's always something to look forward to, always something new."
Prospects for a Fifth Series
Discussing the potential for a fifth series, Flynn remarked, "It's become a kind of habitual thing, because this will be the fifth year if we do go back. Never say whatever, but we are down there in Cornwall in July. That's the fifth summer till almost December." She added that the show is "an intelligent, gentle, but not sort of mushy programme with wonderful puzzles that aren't just fluffy at all."
Kris Marshall also confirmed his ongoing involvement, revealing to Chris Evans that production for series five would begin imminently. He said, "We're about to start shooting season five."
Beyond Paradise is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
