Home Secretary Yvette Cooper's recent appearance on Good Morning Britain has sparked fresh debate over her husband Ed Balls' role as a presenter on the ITV programme. When asked to name her favourite breakfast show, Cooper awkwardly replied, "I'm going to have to say GMB, because otherwise I would be in real trouble when I get home." Her husband later described the response as "a bit grudging," as studio colleagues laughed at the clip.
Impartiality Concerns Mount
Since Cooper's appointment to the cabinet, Balls has faced increasing scrutiny over his ability to remain impartial. As a former Labour MP and husband of a senior minister, he has been unable to interview Labour colleagues on the show, which appears frequently. When he does conduct such interviews, viewers have accused him of Labour bias on social media.
The couple previously faced over 8,000 Ofcom complaints after an interview about the 2024 riots. While the regulator declined to investigate, citing clear disclosure of their relationship and other presenters leading questions, the incident highlighted ongoing concerns.
Audience and Colleague Reactions
Cooper's latest comment has further eroded confidence. Even Balls' colleagues could not hide their amusement, underscoring how the situation has become a running joke. Critics argue that Balls' marriage and Labour history overshadow his presenting, making it impossible for him to be taken seriously during political discussions.
"He cannot be impartial, and that is the first rule of political broadcasting," said one media analyst. The issue is not about Balls' presenting skills, but about the integrity of both him and the show. If co-host Susanna Reid were in a similar situation, similar questions would arise.
ITV has so far ignored the issue, but this latest incident proves the joke has worn thin. It is time for Balls to step down to preserve the show's credibility.
