A study of 2,000 adults has identified the most satisfying word to utter after taking the first refreshing sip of a cold pint on a summer's day. The research reveals that 'luvverly', a quintessentially British expression popularised through mid-20th century television and radio, is the nation's preferred choice.
Regional Variations Across the UK
The survey, commissioned by Strongbow and conducted by OnePoll, uncovered distinct regional preferences. Londoners are most likely to enthusiastically declare 'banger' after a glug in the sunshine, while beer garden devotees in Scotland are more inclined to murmur 'braw' in appreciation. In the East Midlands, that first sip simply isn't complete without a hearty 'bosh', and those in the North West are most likely to pronounce it 'boss'.
Nationwide Favourites
Although 'luvverly' emerged as the most widely used first-sip expression nationwide (17%), it was closely followed by 'lush' (10%), 'class' (9%), and 'phwoar' (7%).
Expert Insights on Dialect
Dr Chris Montgomery, senior lecturer in dialectology at the University of Sheffield, partnered with Strongbow to unearth the fascinating history behind first-sip vocabulary throughout the country. He said: 'People often talk about regional dialects as if they're disappearing, but these findings suggest the opposite and, if anything, show that reports of Britain's regional dialects dying out have been greatly exaggerated.'
'From 'belter' in Glasgow to 'boss' in Liverpool and 'lush' in Wales, Britain is still proudly speaking in local voices - especially when it comes to moments of joy.'
Dr Montgomery added: 'These expressions are really social badges. They tell us where people are from, the communities they belong to and the local identities they're proud to carry. Some of these words have survived for generations, outlasting the industries, jobs and ways of life that first created them.'
'The fact they're still being used to celebrate something as simple as a refreshing first sip shows just how deeply regional language is woven into British culture.'
'In many ways, we're at our most regional when we're expressing happiness. Whether it's reacting to a football result or taking that first cold drink on a hot summer's day, these everyday moments are helping keep local dialects alive.'
Perfect Sip Moments
Across the nation, 31% say this perfect first sip moment occurs on a sweltering summer's day, while 22% enjoy it following a tough day at work. One in five (21%) revealed that taking the first sip of a refreshing drink ranks among the most satisfying everyday moments after a lengthy day, sitting alongside slipping into comfortable clothes (21%) and climbing into bed (22%).
What Can Ruin the Moment
Yet this cherished moment can readily be marred, as 31% insist a lukewarm drink immediately destroys it, while disagreeable company is sufficient to diminish the magic for 22%. Even being served in a plastic cup instead of a proper glass can ruin the moment for 21%.
Campaign Celebration
The cider brand commissioned the research to coincide with the launch of its 'Refresh the Nation' campaign, celebrating the distinctive expressions that make communities across Britain truly one of a kind.
Max Wainwright at HEINEKEN UK, owner of Strongbow, said: 'One of the things I love about Britain is how every corner of the country has its own way of saying things. Growing up in the North West, words like 'boss', 'belter' or 'sound' were just part of everyday life, and it turns out every region has its own version of that.'
'What this research shows is that while the words might change from place to place, the sentiment behind them is exactly the same. Whether you're calling something 'lush', 'proper good' or simply 'luvverly', it's all about sharing a bit of positivity and appreciation.'
'Refreshing The Nation is about celebrating those local quirks and the pride people have in where they're from. There's no single way to sound 'British' and that's exactly what makes Britain such a brilliant place.'
