Tess Crosley's Cryptic Instagram Message Identified as W.H. Auden Poem on Betrayal
The glamorous Mormon missionary Tess Crosley, who has found herself entangled in the highly publicised marriage breakdown of AFL star Lachie Neale and his wife Julie, posted a cryptic message on Instagram earlier this week that has since taken on a striking new significance. Crosley shared two images of herself wearing a head scarf while seated on a boat, captioning the photos with the enigmatic line: 'There is always another story, there is more than meets the eye.'
Poetic Origins Revealed
It has now emerged that this exact line appears in The Secret is Out by the renowned British-American poet W.H. Auden. The poem is a profound exploration of gossip, betrayal, and concealed truths, opening with the verses: 'At last the secret is out, as it always must come in the end… Still waters run deep, my dear, there's never smoke without fire.' It concludes with the poignant line: 'There is always a wicked secret, a private reason for this.'
Crosley published this cryptic social media post on Tuesday, and notably turned off comments on the upload. The saga first surfaced in December when Julie Neale publicly claimed she had been 'betrayed in the most unimaginable way.' By January, Lachie Neale announced their separation and his decision to step down as captain of the Brisbane Lions.
Social Media Activity Amidst Ongoing Speculation
Throughout the unfolding details of the Neales' split, Crosley has remained active on social media. Last month, she posted a photo celebrating her 30th birthday on Instagram. This week, she shared images from a beach outing on the Gold Coast, appearing relaxed and confident in a brown balconette-style bikini with G-string bottoms.
She accessorised with sunglasses, gold earrings, and a ring on her right middle finger, while her wedding finger was noticeably bare. This sighting comes amid ongoing speculation about her own marriage to Ben Crosley, following the fallout from the Neales' separation.
The appearance followed just weeks after Tess's former best friend Julie posted a series of sizzling bikini photos that fans quickly dubbed the ultimate 'revenge' display aimed at her estranged husband Lachie. Crosley, who was once one of Julie's closest friends, seems to have experienced a collapse in that relationship, as the two women no longer follow each other on Instagram.
Demands and Deletions
Julie had previously demanded that Tess delete photos of herself celebrating the Lions' premiership victory in September alongside the Neales and her husband Ben. In a now-deleted Instagram post, Julie wrote: 'Take these down, you idiot, you're embarrassing yourself.' Crosley has yet to publicly comment on the saga surrounding Lachie and Julie's separation.
Rumours about marital issues between Lachie and Julie began circulating in December. Julie addressed the speculation on social media, stating: 'I want to make it very clear that I am not 'working through' anything. I have been betrayed in the most unimaginable way.'
Public Statements and Personal Moves
Lachie later announced the split during a press conference in January, saying: 'While I will not go into specifics, I can say that I have let my family down and I apologise for my actions, which have hurt those closest to me. And for that, I am deeply sorry.' There is no suggestion by Daily Mail of any wrongdoing by Tess.
This week, Lachie broke his silence on social media as he travelled to Western Australia to spend time with his son Freddie and daughter Piper, who attended her first day at kindergarten. Julie has since moved back to her home state of Western Australia with their two children and has been posting regularly on Instagram.
She celebrated her son Freddie's first birthday by sharing several snaps on the platform, along with images of herself enjoying the summer with friends. Lachie and Julie appear to be in the process of selling their $2.43 million luxury Seven Hills home, with Lachie having moved into his own apartment in Brisbane.
Football Focus and Future Plans
The Brisbane midfielder recently linked up with his team for a pre-season training camp on the Sunshine Coast. He was due to appear for a live Q&A show alongside team-mate Dayne Zorko last Friday, but the event was postponed due to low ticket sales. Organisers confirmed that Neale will no longer be appearing at the rescheduled show in March.
Brisbane coach Chris Fagan provided an update on Neale's condition, explaining: 'It hasn't really affected things too much. It's not like we sit around having meetings with the players and talk about it. It's just been myself, (Lions football boss) Danny (Daly) and Lachie.'
Fagan added: 'To Lachie's credit, in terms of the way that he's training and going about things, he's having his best pre-season in a long while. Normally, he's finished (other seasons) quite injured and been in rehab, but this year he had no injury. He's been able to train fully and is in the best shape he's been in for ages. He's in a good place at the moment, obviously got a bit going on personally, but he seems to be coping with that pretty well.'
The Lions will begin their 2026 title defence against the Western Bulldogs on March 7.
