Susan Boyle has shared a candid update on her health, admitting that her singing voice still hasn't fully recovered after suffering a stroke several years ago. The Scottish star, now 65, revealed she continues to struggle with her speech and singing abilities despite making significant progress in her recovery.
Stroke's Lasting Impact
The beloved singer, who rose to fame after her unforgettable audition on Britain's Got Talent in 2009, suffered a stroke in April 2022. The health scare left her with weakness on one side of her body and affected both her speech and singing voice. Speaking about her journey, Boyle explained that rebuilding her voice has been a long and ongoing process.
"I have had a lot of speech therapy. It was difficult at first, but after the first few weeks, my voice slowly started to come back," she told The Sun. "I have been having a lot of vocal lessons, too, for my singing. It still needs some work, but I am sure my singing voice will come back."
'Baby Steps' to Recovery
The 65-year-old emphasized the importance of patience in her recovery. "I am taking wee baby steps. If you go too fast, too soon, you go down a hole," she said. "It took a while for my confidence to come back with my music. But I am getting there. Slowly."
Boyle's journey to stardom began when she stunned judges and millions of viewers with her performance of I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables on the ITV talent show. That performance launched a successful music career, with her debut album selling more than 10 million copies. She also performed at major events, including celebrations for the late Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee.
Recent Projects
Despite her health challenges, Boyle remains optimistic and has continued working on new projects. Last month, she delighted fans with a glamorous new appearance, sporting a blonde bob and fur coat, while collaborating with ice cream brand Cornetto. She also starred in a new Irn Bru advert celebrating Scotland's return to the World Cup after 28 years.
The advert features Boyle alongside Scottish footballer John McGinn, comedian Paul Black, and Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos. In the video, everyone belts out the tune We're Made in Scotland from Girders, a reimagining of the iconic 1980s advert. The clip shows Boyle singing on top of the Forth Bridge after being introduced by McGinn, before cutting to her breakdancing in front of a crowd.
Boyle's determination to keep singing and performing is evident, and she remains hopeful for a full return to touring in the future. "I am sure my singing voice will come back," she said, taking each day as it comes.
