Strictly's Craig Revel Horwood slammed for 'upsetting' George Clarke comment
Strictly judge Craig slammed over George Clarke comment

Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood has found himself at the centre of a social media storm following his blunt critique of contestant and TikTok star George Clarke during Saturday night's live show.

The Emotional Performance That Sparked Outrage

The controversy erupted after George Clarke and his professional partner, Alex Warr, performed a Rumba to Lily Allen's rendition of Somewhere Only We Know. In his introductory video, George shared the deeply personal significance of the song, revealing that his sister had sung it at their grandfather's funeral.

He then delivered an emotionally charged revelation, dedicating the performance to his mother, Nicky, who has recently been diagnosed with cancer. George movingly stated, "Unfortunately, recently she got diagnosed with cancer, nobody deserves what she has gone through, but least of all her."

Craig's Harsh Critique and Fan Backlash

While fellow judges Anton Du Beke and Motsi Mabuse offered praise and support, Craig Revel Horwood delivered a characteristically sharp assessment. He told George, "Technically, that wasn't great. I've got to be honest. And you know what? It actually wasn't a rumba."

He continued his criticism, suggesting the dance belonged "in musical theatre" rather than the Strictly ballroom. Although he conceded that the "story was absolutely magnificent," he concluded by stating, "you won't win my vote."

The comments did not sit well with viewers, who quickly took to social media to express their anger. One fan wrote, "Craig's comments were so upsetting, especially trying to sway the votes when this dance was to raise awareness!"

Another supporter fumed, "I can't believe how nasty Craig was towards him, it was awful," while a third criticised the judge for focusing on the dance style when George was simply performing the routine he was given.

Context and Support for George

This is not the first time George has spoken publicly about his mother's health struggles. He has previously revealed that when he was just 16, his mother was diagnosed with a form of brain inflammation called encephalitis.

Host Claudia Winkleman attempted to diffuse the situation after the critique, urging George and Alex to focus on the positive feedback from the other three judges.

The incident has sparked a wider conversation about the balance between technical critique and emotional sensitivity on one of the BBC's most beloved entertainment shows.
