Real Madrid have taken a decisive step towards the return of Jose Mourinho as head coach by confirming the departure of Alvaro Arbeloa. The former defender, who had been in charge since January, leaves after a trophy-less season that saw the club finish second in La Liga and fail in both the Copa del Rey and Champions League.
Arbeloa's Exit Confirmed
The club issued an official statement expressing gratitude for Arbeloa's service. "Real Madrid CF and Álvaro Arbeloa have reached an agreement to end his time as first team coach. Real Madrid is deeply grateful to Álvaro Arbeloa, who throughout his time at the club, from his time in our youth academy, has consistently demonstrated loyalty, commitment, and professionalism. He exemplifies the values of our club," the statement read. It added: "Real Madrid, which will always be his home, wishes Álvaro Arbeloa and his entire family the best of luck in this new stage of their lives."
Perez's Election Victory
Florentino Perez won the club's presidential election by a landslide over the weekend. During his campaign, he confirmed plans to reappoint Mourinho, who previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013. Perez stated: "We have won the elections and will continue working to keep winning titles. I am still here and I am here to defend Real Madrid. We will continue working so that Real Madrid keeps winning titles, and we will fight until the end to achieve the 16th European Cup. Proud to have the best players in the world, proud to welcome back one of the best coaches in the world, a Madridista like Jose Mourinho."
Mourinho's Potential Return
Mourinho has been heavily linked with the role after an agreement was reportedly reached with his former club Benfica. The Portuguese coach's return is seen as a move to restore the club's dominance after a disappointing campaign. Real Madrid also recently had a bid for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez rejected, adding to the club's active transfer activity.
