Nina Warhurst emotional update after difficult week at BBC

BBC News at One presenter Nina Warhurst has posted an emotional update on Instagram following a difficult week at the BBC studios, after covering the heartbreaking death of 13-month-old Preston Davey. The teacher who murdered the infant received a life sentence, while his partner was jailed for 25 years.

Warhurst reflects on covering tragic child death

On Friday, June 19, Warhurst, 45, wrote: "It's been a difficult week at work. The stories affecting children have weighed heavy on all of us in the office." She added: "I'm having a gentle day with my little one, and we will go and say a prayer later for the ones who didn't get the start in life that every single child deserves."

Warhurst, who previously presented BBC Breakfast and now fronts the News at One bulletin, praised her colleagues: "Weeks like this I am proud of the teams at the BBC for listening to the unlistenable in court, allowing families broken hearts to be seen, and their voices to be heard. Our journalists work hard to get it right, and inevitably sometimes it comes home." She concluded with a poignant message: "Children who suffer should never be forgotten."

Outpouring of support from fans and celebrities

Warhurst was swiftly met with an outpouring of support in the comments section. Stacey Dooley wrote: "I can't even get past the first paragraphs without crying. It's incomprehensible. Sending love." One supporter added: "Stories like this must really play on your mind. Please make sure you take care of yourself Nina." Another remarked: "I was thinking exactly this yesterday when you were reading the news at one. I thought it must be awful for you to have to read these things out and the poor journalists and court people who have to listen to it too!"

One fan commented: "Well done for delivering such harrowing news with professionalism. I'm sure I'd have stood there and cried," while another shared: "Nina I feel for you! Give big hugs to yours tonight!"

Background on Warhurst's career

Warhurst has been a familiar face on British television for years, most recognised for her work on BBC Breakfast. She started reporting on the flagship show in 2018 before securing promotion to chief business presenter in 2020. In March 2025, she announced she was leaving the show after seven years to take on a presenting role on BBC's News at One.

This is not the first time Warhurst has sparked concern among fans. Previously, she addressed comments about not wearing makeup on one side of her face while presenting, explaining she had been told to give her eye some rest. She wrote on social media: "Thanks for the concerned msgs about my asymmetrical mush. I'm in no pain or discomfort, and my lovely pharmacist is helping - left eye just needs a few days off makeup."
