The couple's journey began in early 1993 when they were set up on a blind date. Pfeiffer has since revealed she was initially apprehensive, having sworn off blind dates after a few bad experiences. 'I was kind of nervous,' she told Jimmy Fallon in 2022, explaining that a plea from her best friend convinced her to meet 'this guy, David Kelley.'

'We had this child with us right away, and most people don't have that,' Pfeiffer noted in a 2007 interview with Good Housekeeping. She added, 'Obviously, he really rose to the occasion.'
