Lauren Conrad Confronts Laguna Beach Past After Embarrassment

Lauren Conrad Reflects on Laguna Beach Legacy with Newfound Perspective

Lauren Conrad, the iconic reality television personality, has openly confessed that it has taken her decades to fully reconcile with her very public teenage years. Now aged forty, Conrad spent her formative high school years under the intense scrutiny of millions, with her friendship dramas, partying escapades, and a notorious love triangle broadcast to a global audience.

Years of Shame Over Teenage Antics

In a candid interview with Entertainment Weekly, Conrad revealed she harboured significant embarrassment for a long period regarding her behaviour as an eighteen-year-old star. "I think, for a while, I had a lot of embarrassment about some of my behavior as an 18-year-old, things I would say or do," she explained. However, she now recognises that the unfiltered, raw nature of the cast contributed massively to the show's success.

"We weren't super self-aware," Conrad reflected. "We hadn't really seen a show like this before, so we didn't know what was getting used or not used. I think that's what actually made it feel more authentic." This authenticity, she believes, was a key driver behind Laguna Beach becoming a cultural phenomenon.

Reunion Marks a Therapeutic Turning Point

Conrad, who later starred on The Hills throughout her twenties before launching her highly successful eponymous fashion and lifestyle brand, has recently reunited with her original Laguna Beach castmates. This gathering was for an upcoming televised special designed to commemorate the groundbreaking show's twentieth anniversary.

For Conrad, this reunion marked the first time she had spent substantial time with most of her former co-stars in many years. She described the experience as profoundly "therapeutic," indicating a significant shift in her relationship with that chapter of her life. "I think I'm finally at the place now where I can laugh at it and say I was 18. I've hopefully grown since then," she stated.

Castmates Revisit Infamous Moments

The drama that captivated audiences often centred on a tense love triangle involving Conrad, her rival Kristin Cavallari, and the object of their affection, surfer Stephen Colletti. Colletti, who later pursued an acting career on shows like One Tree Hill, also revisited the past with Entertainment Weekly.

He pinpointed one notorious incident from the show's first season in 2004 that he desperately wishes he could have a "do-over." During a group vacation in Cabo, Colletti, who admitted to being blacked out on tequila after twelve hours of drinking, was filmed screaming at then-girlfriend Kristin Cavallari, pushing her, and using a derogatory term.

"We definitely have those moments of scenes that I wish were not included or we could have a do-over," Colletti confessed. "Of course, Mexico comes to mind... we really did not fully grasp the fact that we were being filmed. We did not know the repercussions there. So that's the big do-over for me."

Life After Laguna Beach

Despite the on-screen turmoil, Colletti and Cavallari have maintained a friendship over the years, even co-hosting a Laguna Beach rewatch podcast titled Back to the Beach with Kristin and Stephen. In contrast, Conrad has historically chosen to distance herself from the show and some cast members, making the recent reunion all the more significant.

Today, Lauren Conrad resides in her hometown of Laguna Beach with her husband, musician William Tell, and their two young sons, Liam, aged eight, and Charlie, aged five. She has successfully transitioned from reality television star to a respected entrepreneur and author.

The special reunion episode, titled The Reunion: Laguna Beach, is scheduled to air in the United States on April 10th, exclusively on the Roku streaming platform. It promises to offer fans a nostalgic yet reflective look back at the series that launched a reality TV era and the personal journeys of its stars two decades later.
