Reality TV star and business mogul Kim Kardashian has sparked a fierce online debate after revealing she gave each of her four children their own Pomeranian puppy for Christmas.
Elaborate Gifts Spark Controversy
The SKIMS founder shared the news with her followers via Instagram Stories on Thursday. She posted several pictures showing the new puppies, two with darker fur and two with light grey fur, playing with toys in their crates and snuggling together on a plush sofa. Kim captioned one image of all four dogs cuddled up, "Each kid got a puppy."
Her children – daughters North West, 12, and Chicago, seven, and sons Saint, ten, and Psalm, six, whom she shares with ex-husband Kanye West – were the recipients of the lavish presents. However, the gesture was not met with universal approval.
Fans Voice Outrage on Social Media
Shortly after the reveal, numerous fans took to forums like Reddit to express their disapproval. The central criticism was that live animals are unsuitable as surprise gifts, especially for children.
One user stated bluntly, "Puppies are not Christmas gifts for kids." Another agreed, arguing that pets should only be given if someone has explicitly expressed a long-term desire and commitment to care for an animal, calling Kim's move "f**ked up."
Others questioned the logic behind giving four separate puppies. "If they each got a puppy then it’s not special at all. How will they learn to love one pet as siblings when they each get a personal dog like it’s a Tamagotchi?" one person typed.
Concerns were also raised about the family's understanding of pet responsibility. One comment read, "They don’t realise what a big responsibility having a pet is, they just have it for show and cause it’s small and cute... when the pup grows up they no longer care for it. Absolutely ridiculous." Others described the decision as "sad" and "wrong on every level."
A History of Pet-Related Scrutiny
This is not the first time Kim Kardashian's treatment of her pets has been questioned. The four new Pomeranians join her existing dogs, Sushi and Sake, which she adopted with sister Kourtney Kardashian in mid-2017.
In 2022, she faced significant backlash when a video posted by her daughter North on their shared TikTok account appeared to show Sushi and Sake living in the family's garage. The clip, intended to showcase a Christmas setup with a mini tree and stockings, revealed the dogs in a large pen with pee pads on the floor. Many followers criticised what they saw as an inadequate living arrangement for the animals.
The puppy controversy emerged just a day after Kim shared her emotional reaction to failing the California Bar Exam on her Hulu series, The Kardashians. The 45-year-old, who has studied law for seven years following in the footsteps of her late father Robert Kardashian, was seen fighting back tears as her family comforted her. She later took to social media to frame the setback as motivation, writing, "Falling short isn't failure - it's fuel."
