Royal journalist Camilla Tominey has recalled phoning Kate Middleton during a difficult time and being left stunned by the future Princess of Wales' graceful and composed response.
A Journalist's Unexpected Call
Speaking on The Telegraph's Royal T podcast regarding the fallout from Catherine's 2007 separation from Prince William, royal commentator Camilla Tominey disclosed how she unexpectedly ended up conversing directly with the future Princess of Wales after news of the split surfaced.
Camilla detailed that she had been requested by her news desk to pursue reports concerning the couple's break-up. Through shared connections, she succeeded in obtaining Catherine's telephone number and chose to ring.
Recounting the exchange, she said she telephoned the future Princess of Wales and stated: "Hi, it's Camilla Tominey from the Sunday Express."
A Graceful Response
To her surprise, Catherine replied courteously. Camilla recalled enquiring whether she wished to comment on the reports concerning her relationship with William, reports the Mirror.
According to Camilla, associate editor of The Telegraph, Catherine answered: "Listen, I haven't ever commented about this relationship before. So, I don't think I'm going to start now."
The journalist acknowledged she instantly appreciated the reply.
"I said, 'No, you're right.' I was like, 'Yeah, fair enough. Thank you. And can I just say, good luck in life.' You know? Because I thought it was over," Camilla elaborated.
Reflections on the Split
The separation had stunned royal observers. William and Catherine became acquainted while studying at the University of St Andrews and had been in a relationship for several years prior to parting ways in 2007. Reports at the time indicated William instigated the break-up during a telephone call.
Reflecting on the episode, Camilla said numerous people believed the relationship had concluded permanently.
She said: "We all thought it was over and I thought, 'Oh god, what a class act.' She could have just hung up. She could have been very rude. Also she's in the depths of despair. What am I thinking disturbing her at that time?"
She continued: "She probably got Carol with an E in the background going, 'Don't answer the phone to any journalist.' But the point is she is very serene."
Reconciliation and Royal Life
Notwithstanding the split, William and Catherine ultimately reconciled. The reunion came later in 2007, with reports suggesting the late Queen Elizabeth II was pleased to see the relationship restored following the temporary separation.
Their reconciliation proved to be the pivotal moment in one of the most scrutinised royal romances of recent decades. In 2010, they revealed their engagement, and the following year married in a globally broadcast ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
Since then, William and Catherine have established themselves as prominent members of the Royal Family and are currently the Prince and Princess of Wales. Together, they are raising their three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
