K-Pop Producers Arrested in Japanese Drug Bust Following XG Concert

Two influential producers responsible for some of K-pop's biggest hits have been apprehended in a significant drug bust in Japan. The arrests occurred shortly after a sold-out performance by the internationally acclaimed girl group XG.

Hotel Raid and Arrest Details

According to reports from Jiji Press, Junho Sakai, aged 39 and professionally known as Simon Jakops, was arrested alongside three other men at a hotel in Nagoya, Japan, on Monday. The arrests were made on suspicion of cocaine possession. Authorities seized four bags containing white powder and one bag of plant fragments, believed to be dried cannabis, during the raid which took place around 12:20 a.m.

Sakai, a former member of the South Korean boy band DMTN, has gained recent prominence as the creator and primary producer of XG. The group has achieved substantial international fame since their debut in 2022.

Second Producer Identified

Sources including the Malay Mail and Japan's TBS indicate that one of the other individuals arrested is Korean-American producer and artist Kim Jung-seung, also 39 years old. Known by his stage name Chancellor and English name Michael Kim, he has been a major figure in South Korea's hip-hop and R&B scene for over a decade.

Kim has collaborated with numerous K-pop stars, including Girls' Generation's Taeyeon. In recent years, he has worked under Sakai as a producer for XG, contributing to writing and producing many of the group's hit singles.

Official Statements from XG and Label

XG's record label issued a formal statement on Thursday, emphasizing that XG "is in no way involved" in the incident. The label confirmed they are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation conducted by authorities.

The group themselves released a separate statement to their 3.4 million Instagram followers, expressing their shock and confusion. "We were deeply shocked and confused by the sudden news, and we are still trying to process it ourselves," they wrote. "We will continue, as we always have, to face our music with sincerity and dedicate ourselves wholeheartedly to our activities as XG."

XG's Unique Position and Success

XG debuted in 2022 with singles "Tippy Toes" and "Mascara." The group, comprised entirely of Japanese members, operates uniquely within the K-pop industry by utilizing the South Korean training system and production style despite having no Korean members. This has sparked ongoing debates about whether XG should be classified as J-pop or K-pop.

Despite this ambiguity, XG has achieved remarkable global success over the past two years. Their accomplishments include:

  • Performance at Coachella in April 2023
  • Appearance on the finale of NBC's The Voice
  • Two albums charting on the Billboard 200
  • Endorsement deals with major brands including Nike, McDonald's, and Gucci

Recent Developments and Future Plans

In December, group member Cocona made headlines by coming out as transmasculline non-binary on their 20th birthday, revealing they had undergone top surgery earlier in the year. "The hardest thing I've ever faced was accepting and embracing myself," Cocona shared in an emotional statement.

XG is currently concluding the Japanese portion of their second world tour, with anticipated announcements for additional dates across North America, Europe, Australia, and Latin America. The group remains committed to their musical journey despite the recent controversy surrounding their producers.
