Joe Cole predicts Spain will 'limp out' of World Cup

Former England international Joe Cole has cast doubt on Spain's chances at the upcoming World Cup, suggesting the European champions will 'limp out' of the tournament. Speaking on The Dressing Room Podcast, Cole expressed his lack of faith in Luis de la Fuente's squad, despite their impressive qualifying campaign.

Spain's World Cup Prospects Under Scrutiny

Spain topped their qualifying group with an undefeated record, winning five and drawing one of their six matches. They enter Group H as favourites ahead of Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay. However, Cole remains unconvinced, pointing to the fitness concerns surrounding teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury.

'I'm going to throw it out there, I think this Spain team will limp out,' Cole said. 'They're not a flash in the pan, that's unfair because they've got top players. But I think the Spanish league is on a downer at the moment. Since Barcelona have fallen away... Atletico Madrid were dreadful, there's no Spain players in the Real Madrid squad.'

Cole added: 'I think they were a young side that put it all together for one tournament. For instance, if Lamine Yamal doesn't play, I just don't fancy them. I think the power of France will be more than enough, Germany will be more than enough, Brazil... for some reason, it's only a hunch.'

Portugal's Potential and Ronaldo's Role

In contrast, Cole believes Portugal have a strong chance to go far in the tournament, citing their midfield depth. However, he stressed that Cristiano Ronaldo must accept a reduced role for the team to succeed. 'The crucial thing for me is if Ronaldo can humble himself and realise he doesn't need to play every minute of every game,' Cole explained.

He praised Portugal's midfield, including Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, Bruno Fernandes, and Joao Neves, calling it 'the best midfield in the tournament.' Cole also highlighted the attacking talents of Rafael Leao and Bernardo Silva.

England's World Cup Hopes

Cole also addressed England's chances, urging fans to move past the controversy over Thomas Tuchel's squad selection. He named the Three Lions as one of 12 teams capable of winning the trophy. 'We've got so many matchwinners,' he said. 'I think Thomas has got a style of play, and he's picked a certain type of player who could fit that style.'

Cole concluded: 'I think we're one of 12 teams that can win it and things will have to happen.'
