Joanna Lumley Targeted by Masked Motorbike Gang in Late-Night Car Theft Attempt

Dame Joanna Lumley was reportedly targeted by a group of masked motorbike thugs who attempted to steal her car in the middle of the night. The incident occurred in the Vauxhall area, where neighbours were awakened by a loud commotion as the gang surrounded the vehicle.

Neighbour Recalls Chaotic Scene

Neighbour Emma Duncan, writing for The Times, described being "woken in the middle of the night" by the disturbance. She observed a group of men on motorbikes encircling a car with its alarm blaring, with one individual seated in the driver's seat shouting, "I can't f****** start it." The car boot was reportedly damaged during the failed theft attempt.

Emma revealed that Joanna Lumley emerged from her home in her dressing gown to confront the gang, who fled the scene upon being discovered. The actress, known for her roles in travel shows and programmes like Car SOS, was unharmed but shaken by the brazen late-night attack.

Police Investigate String of Vehicle Crimes

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed they are investigating a series of vehicle-related offences in the Vauxhall area. Between March 26 and 28, three reports were filed regarding damage to vehicles in attempts to gain entry, highlighting a concerning pattern of neighbourhood crime.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated: "Tackling car theft and other neighbourhood crime remains a priority for the Met. We have strengthened neighbourhood policing, with more officers focused on identifying and targeting the most prolific offenders who cause the greatest harm to communities." They added that across London, vehicle crime, including theft and damage, has decreased by nearly 15 percent compared to the same period last year.

Joanna Lumley's Reflections on Milestone Birthday

In a recent interview, Joanna Lumley opened up about approaching her 80th birthday, sharing her lighthearted perspective on ageing. She remarked, "It's extraordinary, isn't it? I've been saying I'm 80 for the last two or three years because I thought I was, but I wasn't." Lumley dismissed the notion of it being a significant precipice, noting she plans to work on her birthday and feels touched by the attention.

During the same conversation, she shared her personal philosophy for maintaining mental sharpness and energy, emphasising the importance of novelty and engagement. "Having no certainty keeps you vibrant and engaged. If you're always trying something new," she explained, reflecting her adventurous spirit showcased in travel series exploring Caribbean destinations like Cuba and Haiti.

The Mirror has reached out to a representative for Joanna Lumley for further comment on the incident. As vehicle crime continues to be a focus for law enforcement, this event underscores the ongoing challenges faced by residents in urban areas like Vauxhall.
