King Charles Honoured with Blue Peter Green Badge for Environmental Leadership
King Charles Receives Blue Peter Green Badge for Sustainability

King Charles has been honoured with a prestigious Blue Peter Green badge, celebrating his exceptional dedication to environmental protection and sustainability initiatives. The monarch received the award during a ceremony held yesterday at Dumfries House in East Ayrshire, Scotland, where his longstanding personal commitment to ecological causes was formally recognised.

Sustainability and Food Waste Initiatives

The presentation specifically acknowledged the King's comprehensive work through The King's Foundation, particularly his influential efforts to combat food waste across the United Kingdom. His instrumental role in establishing the Coronation Food Project in 2023 has created significant impact, redirecting surplus food that would otherwise be discarded to support vulnerable communities in London, Birmingham, and Merseyside.

Educational Engagement with Young People

During the event at the Pierburg Education Centre and Kauffman Education Garden, King Charles engaged with primary six pupils participating in the foundation's innovative Growing Together, Cooking Together programme. The students were actively involved in potting activities, demonstrating practical sustainability education. Additionally, secondary school pupils from Auchenharvie Academy in Stevenston received recognition for their own commendable work promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices within their community.

Presentation and Time Capsule Ceremony

The Blue Peter Green badge was formally presented to the King by Blue Peter presenter Joel Mawhinney, alongside Liza Kengran, the foundation's sustainable food systems curriculum manager. In a symbolic gesture, a second badge was placed within the foundation's time capsule, scheduled to be unearthed after one hundred years. This commemorates the organisation's thirty-fifth anniversary and will remain buried at the historic Dumfries House estate.

Mawhinney expressed profound admiration during the presentation, stating: 'Since we're here today by the beautiful time capsule, and in recognition of all the amazing work you do to protect the planet and lead us to a more sustainable and healthy future, as well as your work inspiring the next generation of students and young people through The King's Foundation, we would love and be honoured to give you your very own Green Blue Peter Badge.'

Previous Royal Recognition

This environmental accolade follows previous royal honours from the iconic children's programme. In 2023, both King Charles and Queen Camilla received prestigious gold Blue Peter badges. The King's award at that time similarly celebrated his environmental advocacy and support for youth through The King's Trust, while Queen Camilla was recognised for her dedicated efforts promoting literacy and reading initiatives across the nation.

Community Engagement and Restoration Efforts

Later in the day, King Charles met with emergency service personnel and officials involved in responding to the Union Street fire adjacent to Glasgow Central station. The monarch personally thanked first responders from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Police Scotland, and British Transport Police, along with representatives from Network Rail and Glasgow City Council, for their service to the city.

Charles revealed how students participating in The King's Foundation's building craft programme have offered their expertise to assist in restoring the significantly damaged Gordon Street building. Jacqueline Farrell, executive director for education at The King's Foundation, explained: 'We are looking to see how one of our programmes, which is around the building craft and craftsmanship skills, could actually help support the rebuild of the Gordon Street building, especially around some of the traditional craftsmanship that was lost in the fire.'
