Comedian and former late-night host Jay Leno was spotted over the weekend tending to one of his beloved vintage cars on a roadside in Los Angeles. The 75-year-old entertainer, who has faced significant health scares in recent years, was seen hunched over the hood of an old black vehicle in the Studio City neighbourhood on Saturday.
Casual Appearance While Working on Vehicle
Leno appeared clean-shaven with his signature white-gray hair falling over his forehead as he carefully inspected the car. He was dressed in a light blue button-up jean shirt, with his phone and eyeglasses neatly tucked into each of the two front pockets. The retired television host completed his casual outfit with a pair of belted darker blue jeans and black sneakers.
Previous Serious Accidents Involving Car Collection
This sighting comes more than three years after Leno was badly burned in a terrifying incident involving his vintage car collection. In that accident, a 1907 steam engine he was working on exploded in his face at his private garage, resulting in hospitalisation.
Mechanic George Swift, who was present at the garage during the incident, later explained to media outlets that it was a steam car powered by gas that caused the explosion. Swift recalled Leno calling him to report the fire and alert him that emergency services were on their way.
In another frightening incident during late 2024, Leno suffered a serious fall while in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, tumbling 60 feet down a hill. The accident left him with significant bruising on his face and injuries including a broken wrist and lost fingernail. Remarkably, despite these serious injuries, the seasoned performer went ahead with a scheduled show in Greensburg just hours after the fall.
Commitment to Marriage Vows Amid Personal Challenges
Beyond his automotive interests and accidents, Leno has recently spoken publicly about his personal life and commitment to his marriage. In January, he revealed that people have expressed surprise at his dedication to staying by his wife Mavis's side following her diagnosis with advanced dementia in early 2024.
During an appearance on the Life Above the Noise With Maria Shriver podcast, Leno discussed the importance of marriage vows in contemporary society. He shared that one person had crassly asked whether he planned to "get a girlfriend now" following his wife's diagnosis.
The comedian expressed confusion at people's surprised reactions to his commitment, stating that he believes he's simply doing what he's supposed to do according to his marriage vows. Leno reflected that such commitment used to be considered normal behaviour in relationships, with straying from vows being viewed as the exception rather than the rule.
Leno's roadside car maintenance session represents a return to one of his lifelong passions despite the serious accidents that have temporarily interrupted his automotive activities. His continued dedication to both his vintage car collection and his marriage vows demonstrates a consistency in character that has defined much of his public and private life.
