Mikel Arteta has signalled he is ready to hand Raheem Sterling a starting role at Arsenal, with Gabriel Martinelli's place under increasing scrutiny. The Arsenal manager previously worked with Sterling at Manchester City and has no hesitation in selecting the loanee ahead of the Brazilian, who has struggled for consistency this season.
Speaking about his initial conversation with Sterling before the deadline-day move from Chelsea, Arteta revealed: "After 10 seconds I knew we had to bring him (to Arsenal) because he really wanted it, and that was my only question mark, what stage is he at in his career?" He added that Sterling "looks great", has "a big smile on his face", and "wants to prove a point".
Sterling had fallen out of favour at Chelsea, being excluded from their Premier League opener under Enzo Maresca. The 29-year-old made a late substitute appearance in the north London derby, replacing Martinelli, whose starting spot has become less secure due to fluctuating performances.
Arteta addressed Martinelli's status, saying: "We need wingers with ability to go one vs one, to attack the spaces, to have the work rate, to increase the goal threat from every position." He stressed the need for flexibility in the front line, particularly with injuries limiting options.
Martinelli is still awaiting his first goal of the season and has not matched his 2022/23 form, while Leandro Trossard has grown in importance for the Gunners. Sterling will be eager to cement a regular place in Arteta's starting XI as the campaign progresses.
