Good Morning Britain viewers were left furious during Tuesday's live broadcast after hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls sparked outrage with comments perceived as anti-Scottish. The debate centered on King Charles's approval of a one-off bank holiday in Scotland for the country's opening World Cup fixture against Haiti.
Hosts' remarks ignite backlash
During the segment, Susanna Reid described the bank holiday as 'really outrageous,' questioning how long it takes Scots to get over playing their first match. Ed Balls added fuel to the fire by asking, 'How hungover do they get?' while Kevin Maguire speculated about fans drinking in pubs at 2am.
Viewers took to social media to express their displeasure, accusing the presenters of relying on stereotypes and being condescending. One viewer wrote: 'Very condescending attitude from all the presenters taking part in that debate! Extremely anti Scottish. Not everyone is getting it and not everyone wants it.'
Audience demands apology
Another commented: 'I thought the presenters also focused heavily on stereotypes, portraying Scots as heavy drinkers. Do better Good Morning Britain. Your presenters owe some of your audience an apology.' A third stated: 'The presenters talking about Scots was unacceptable. Very condescending attitude, extremely anti Scottish comments. Uncalled for.'
Some viewers pointed out that not everyone in Scotland receives the bank holiday, while others expressed disappointment at the programme's perceived anti-Scottish stance. Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am.
