Former Love Island star George Knight has spoken out about the real reason he left the show less than a week into his stay, hitting back at 'nonsense' fan theories.
George Knight's Unexpected Exit
It was confirmed last week that professional footballer George Knight, 28, had chosen to return home. He arrived as a bombshell just days earlier, the morning after the original line-up moved into the Villa, alongside Yasmin, and was tasked with deciding who should be the first to be dumped.
His brief stint was eventful: he chose Samraj to dump, only for Samraj to return hours later; he grew close to Robyn, but was then picked by Mica during the first recoupling. Eventually, he decided to leave, citing 'personal reasons'.
Family Health Concern Revealed
Initially, George posted on Instagram: 'Family comes first, always. Leaving the Love Island villa was a decision made in order to be with my family. Out of respect for them, I'd prefer not to go into any further detail.'
Now, in his first interview since leaving, on The Sun's Showbiz Fix podcast, he described the experience as 'a bit of a whirlwind', 'overwhelming', and 'nuts'. He disclosed that he was summoned to the beach hut, expecting standard questions, but instead was told to meet a producer at the Villa's front entrance. There, he received a message from his family and was allowed a phone call with his parents.
'It is all very private. But it was a health concern with a member of the immediate family,' he said. 'They said they felt like they weren't doing their role as a parent if they didn't let me know. And with what was said, I just felt like it was the right thing to come home.'
Prior Knowledge and Final Decision
George revealed he was aware of the health issues before entering the Villa, but at that point, it wasn't a strong enough worry to expect an early exit. He emphasised that family is always the priority, and there was no question about his final decision.
Dismissing Fan Conspiracy Theories
George also addressed conspiracy theories from fans, such as a secret message system for his family to alert him if he wasn't coming across well on TV. He called these theories 'a load of nonsense'.
Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
