Freddie Prinze Jr. Celebrates Milestone 50th Birthday with Wife Sarah Michelle Gellar
Freddie Prinze Jr. marked his significant 50th birthday on Sunday, an occasion he is undoubtedly sharing with his wife of nearly 24 years, Sarah Michelle Gellar. The couple represents one of Hollywood's most enduring and celebrated success stories, with their wedding anniversary approaching this September.
An Unexpected Romance Blossoms on Set
Their union, which many initially doubted would last, began in 1997 on the set of the horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer. Freddie himself has humorously confessed they were just two 'dumb kids' when they first met. Interestingly, their characters in the film were not romantically involved; Freddie's Ray was in love with Jennifer Love Hewitt's Julie, while Sarah's Helen dated Ryan Phillippe's Barry.
The pair quickly formed a genuine friendship. Freddie would drive Sarah to the gym as she lacked a driver's licence at the time. 'We just would talk about life and stuff like that, and we had completely different philosophies on just about everything,' he revealed to Us Weekly, highlighting their contrasting backgrounds: a born-and-raised New Yorker and an LA native.
From Friendship to Lasting Love
Reflecting on their early connection, Freddie told USA Weekly, 'We were just dumb kids that fell in love, man. We were in our 20s, making mistakes left and right and just kind of found each other.' He emphasised that their foundation of trust as friends first made the relationship 'really easy'.
Their first date occurred entirely by accident. Planned as a group dinner, all other friends cancelled, leaving just Freddie and Sarah to dine together. 'We were supposed to go out with a group of people, and everybody else bailed… so it was just the two of us,' Freddie recounted on The Howard Stern Show.
Engagement, Marriage, and Family Life
After dating for several years, Freddie proposed in 2001. Sarah has always valued privacy, stating she 'didn't want a big public proposal' and preferred something intimate. Art imitated life when they both starred as the iconic couple Fred Jones and Daphne Blake in the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo film, which began shooting shortly after their engagement and became a box office hit.
The couple married in 2002 at a Mexican resort, with Sarah in a Vera Wang gown and Freddie in a white linen suit. They have since welcomed two children: daughter Charlotte in 2009 and son Rocky in 2012. Sarah shared a charming anecdote about Freddie showing Rocky clips of her as Buffy the Vampire Slayer to prove that girls can indeed fight.
The Secret to Their Long-Lasting Union
When asked the secret to their happy marriage, Sarah advised, 'Take the 10 minutes – put the phone down. Have a cup of coffee together. Walk the dog at the end of the night. Read a story with your kids.' She stressed the importance of being present amidst life's many distractions.
Celebrating their 23rd anniversary last year, Sarah posted a nostalgic throwback photo from their wedding day with a playful caption counting their time together in years, months, and seconds. As Freddie enters his new decade, their love story continues to inspire, proving that Hollywood relationships can indeed stand the test of time.
